It's May 1 2011 , Sunday night 8:46pm PT , President Obama just finished his announcement of the death of Bin Laden.

My raw initial thoughts? ... man , very surreal. There's a part of me that shakes my head at those blood thirsty revenge mongers whom are celebrating like Ewoks. There's part of me that's happy this is over with.. the biggest man hunt in modern times. Two of the biggest figure heads in the Middle East have been killed in the last 5 years.

It's easy to just label any enemy of the United States as evil and the bad guy , but sometimes there's more to it than just a war.

Vancouver Comic Book Store Review: The Connection

though they specialize in RPG games , they are also a comic book store too.

The Comic book shop I went to before was over priced. Comic Land , nice guys but they're way overpriced for people with bigger pull lists. They charged a ridiculous Cdn sur charge.. on top of that taxed fully so a 3.99 comic cost 4.93. Now if you subscribe to 10 comics.. you get a wopping 10% discount which isnt gauranteed to all the time , you have to remind them. So that 4.93 comic cost 4.43

This dissatisfaction lead me to migrate to another neighbourhood comic book store , Connection Games and Comics.

The good: Cheaper. Simply put if you pull 10 comics or more.. you get %20 off the cover price. Thats right... a $3.99 comic cost =3.61. savings of 82 cents per comic. NOw those whom only subscribe to 1 or 2 titles.. you might not care. For those who pull 10+ titles.. it adds up over a year. Bags and boards included too.. they charge 25C at Comic Land on top of their price(Might even be more? ). But do the math for a year , if you're pulling in 20+ titles... over $200 a year savings. Think how many more comics you can buy?

The whatever: They use a online service for subscribers , Comixology. It may not be for everyone but its worth checking out to see if you do like this method of comic book pulling. The negative about this is you cant pre-pay online.. also its not very accurate in pulling titles for you. I have to tell them what i want if its a indie title otherwise it doesnt get automatically sent.

The Bad: They dont bring in a vast general week to week stock. If you want some eclectic indie titles , you have to ask for them to be ordered yourself as previously mentioned. So it takes some research on your behalf to find out what titles are coming up.

My Bad: Im not into RPG games so I cant rave or rant for their RPG services but they hold weekly tournaments and have a large stock of supplies. Worth checking out if you're into table top , paper and dice RPGs.

The Cool: the staff is really laid back , polite , and helpful.. dependent on whom you ask they are very knowledgeable to their own specialties.

They have one of the best bargain bins for both trades and sets. Fantastic deals.

Constructive Criticism: Add to what I suggested before... add more variety to their weekly pulls but thats not really a big deal.

The Bottomline: If you know what you want in comics , this is the best place in terms of pricing on floppies. The trades are sold at US prices , but the discounts dont count against trades. Discounts follows as : 3-5 comics=10% , 6-9=15% , 10+ =20%

Comic Book Movie Review: RED

Retired. Extremely. Dangerous. by Warren Ellis

now the comic was somewhat mediocre , heavily over hyped or overrated depending on how you look at it. The movie though , its another story...

The Movie is vastly different from the comics in plot , characters , tone , style. everything.... thank god. The movie in short was fun , feel good action fun , its Bruce Willis for fuck sakes right?

The Plot: The comic was straight and simple.. new head of CIA thinks Frank Moses knows too much despite being retired and ordered him terminatd.. Moses tracks down the new head of CIA to seek revenge. The movie however has a few more angles to it...
1) the operator in the comics is now Moses love interest and has a crush on her and pursues her as a secondary plot.
2) the hit on Moses is mysterious , its multi-layered which Moses has to slowly unravel which serves as the main plot.
3) Moses is accompanied by three associates ( the RED prequel comics introduces all 4 characters backgrounds).. many more characters in the movie version which is a good thing. They are all likeable.

Frank and Sarah played by Mary Louise Parker whom was channelling every cliched innocent lovable damsel turned sidekick.

The young idiot crowd complained the casting was too old and couldnt relate to anybody and probably thought EW to all the sexual ineundos made by the cast. Fucking morons. This would indeed be a great action flick for the older crowd ,and see some old farts kick some ass again.

        To say the movie went light on intensity is an understatement. The comics , the original and prequels held no prisoners nor mercy and really punched you in the face as a reader. The movie was a little predictable and formulaic once you realized that... its not as bad ass as the comics. If you never read the comics , you really think Moses is a great guy , he's actually suppose to be as ruthless and heartless and they tried to tell you in the movie but it wasnt convincing in the movies.

     The villians are ok , could've been done better , didnt really get a hate on for anybody. For one as Moses unraveled the plot the villian became a moving target.. literally and figuratively.

     BUY IT /RENT IT/PIRATE IT/FUCK IT...

Rent. Pirate if you can , I dont think an official DVD/Blu Ray matters much , there's not that much CGI fx to really need Blu Ray. Its similar to the comic in that its not a must see but wouldnt be horrible at all if you did see it.

Weekend Trade: The Walking Dead vol.1 "Days Gone By"

    I decided Im going to re-read the Walking Dead as I watch the new AMC series. Episode 1 was basically 2/5th of volume 1 and episode 2 was essentially the next 1/5th of volume.1 , they're really milking this out which is a good thing caz I want to the show to catch up too quick.

    I ended up just reading through Volume 1 entirely . It still a fantastic read and sets up one of the best comic series going.

    There's a few things I completely forgot about , I forgot about the scene where Glenn keeps puking from rubbing a dead hand all over himself. I also forgot about a couple characters , one is Donna , Allen's wife , I knew she was there but I forgot what her character looked like , what she was like overall. The second is Jim , I completely forgot about Jim the mechanic , the guy whom escaped Atlanta at the expense of his entire family being consumed. Yet I remembered his farewell quite vividly once I saw him.

   The other thing is looking back and seeing everybody's first appearance , and how they were back then.. Rick Grimes of course but Glenn and Andrea in particular. Look at Andrea and then fast forward to Volume 13 ... its mind blowing.

    The volume jumps right into the appocalypse and the action , with his journey into Atlanta , escape from Atlanta with the help of a new friends Glenn , and then finding his wife and son at the camp. There were plenty of ups and downs , and Robert Kirkman sets the tone of the entire series in this first volume. He has a way of settling down the book into a relaxed mindset then BAM! just when the camp looked like it was settling in and thngs were going to get safe... and boring .. ZOMBIE ATTACK. The first victim was quite surprising and tragic , this is was the first FUCK NOOOOO scene caz somebody had to finish the job on the first victim or they'll turn. It was only a couple panels but you felt the impact linger right til the end of the volume with some amazing panel work on the grieving by Tony Moore.

New Comic Book Day : 11/3/10

Im cutting back on my floppies ( its what the kids are calling comic books these days) and focusing on Trades. The only draw back in trades is they're usually 2-3 months behind the comic book run so you have to avoid spoiler talks. I've been currently doing it with The Walking Dead so its not that bad. I do plan on pulling a few titles still. Benefits are too overwhelming to buy trades instread..cheaper , easier to re-read and store .. thats all.

I plan on keeping for on going:
Chew ..100% Ill be pulling this til the end.
Hack Slash ..I would like to but I can see myself just waiting for the trades.
I Zombie .. I plan on pulling to #10 at the least.. dependant on the direction of the series.
Mindfield .. I want to pull at least 2 more issues maybe 3.
Sixth Gun.. just learned this is an on going series now. Im still contemplating this one.. I might just buy the trades on this one.

Then Im finishing up some mini series (where Im at now/total in series)

Turf (3/5)
Neonomicon (2/4)
Mystery Society (4/5)

Today's Pull

1. I Zombie #7(vertigo) by C. Roberson , art: M. Allred

   This was probaly the best of the series thus far. The overall production and direction was very good , it had good pacing and the stories moved along nicely.

   The plot: Bodies have been stolen from the morgue therefore there havent been many burials which means Gewyn hasnt been eating and she's starting to zombiefy caz if she doesnt eat one brain a month she will lose her conscienceness and become a souless , mindless zombie.

    The agents are still hunting the vampire girls whom they think they have trapped but find the tables have been turned.

   There's a few things going but its all finally starting to pick up in pace and we're starting to see some real payoffs from the first 6 issues. Just when I thought I might drop the title , it ends with a real good cliffhanger and now I wanna see what happens.

2. Mystery Society #4(idw) by Steve Niles , art; Fiona Staples

This was a good issue , Fiona Staple's art alone is worth the look. Its such a crisp looking comic. For me I found the main story line a little contrive and dry to be honest , Im really digging the secondary plot with Secret Skull and Verne the robot. The quest for Edgar Allen Poe's skull was intriguing , exciting , funny , .. it was compelling in general. Overall in general I still like the concept of this comic , this looks like its going to be a series of shorts via Locke and Key.

Whats Next for my Graphic Novel/comic Blog? Ill be reviewing Trades and collected hardcovers mainly. Of course floppies still just wont be as many as before. and of course comic related movies and shows.

Weekend Trade: Halloween recommendations

Here are some recommended trades for halloween. These arent about halloween per say but they are suited for halloween themed reading material. For yourself or if you expecting some friends over and want to reading material to fit the occasion , I highly recommend these graphic novels/comics.

The Walking Dead (rated: mature) , the tv show starts on Halloween , and if by some chance you like the show or the idea of a zombie world soap opera then this is definitely your graphic novel . Its entirely in black and white , its 12-13 volumes in so you'll have tons to catch up on. Its on going so there is no ending to this piece of hot zombie ass of comic lore.

The Hard Covers are $21 each , they collect 2 trades each.
The Deluxe Compendium collects the first 8 volumes for $40 on amazon .. THIS IS THE BEST BUY. $5 per volume. Plus you get bonus stuff in these collected editions.

Hack Slash. (rated: teens)A high school girl whom's mom was a crazy slasher killer decides to dedicate her life to fighting and beating down these serial slashers via Jason , Freddy Kruger , Michael Meyers... not them in particular but those kind of killers. Did i mention she's a bi-sexual scantily dressed teen with a sweet body? Its all so taboo. Of course they're making a movie of this so get on board now!

My First Maniac and Murder Messiah comics

Dead of Night: Man-Thing. (rated:teen) I picked this up for $4 out of the bargain bin , its a re-telling of Man-Things' origin. Its such a throw back to vintage sci-fi and horror from the 50s , its amazing. I would recommend any kind of classic collection from vintage titles such as Man-Thing , Vampirella , Tales of the Crypt , Dracula , Sherlock Holmes , Solomon Kane , ...etc. This old stuff still holds its own and its great nostalgia. I would guess this is definitely for older readers caz Im not sure how young readers would react to this. Its just cheezy geeky shits and giggles..

Dead of Night TPB - I bought mine for $4 at Golden Age's bargain bin.
Essential Man-Thing , superb value its $14 for 600 pages , you get the original origin story and first few runs of Man-Thing.

Vertigo Resurrected#1: Shoot : (rated : mature). Since this just came out its probably easiest to find on store shelves. Its a mixed collection of stories varying from horror , sci-fi , political ,..etc In the end its a hell of a read and its perfect for a Halloween read for anybody whom has likes cool shit.

$8 at comic shops. I dont know if book stores will carry this though its the same size as a small trade paperback.

Something for the family and kids

The Stuff of Legend. (rated: family) I cant say enough about this series , except I wish I "Weird Science" it so I can copulate it. They must've took brain steroids to have their imagination level this high. Here's a quick run down : In 1944 a boy gets kidnapped by the BoogeyMan into his realm "the Dark" , the boys' toys rally together and decide they must rescue him from the dark. The characters are outstanding , the landscape is mind blowing , the art is crazy good ,the story is crackhead addicting. This is a new series , I think there's a plan 3 set volume , they're currently in the middle of volume 2. so there's still lots to go. This is a hidden gem.

collected trade is $13 , 11 on amazon. Beautiful book.

Solid day today except I still havent recieved my Hack Slash #4!!! its been over a month over due!

Vertigo Resurrected #1 , Turf #3 , Morning Glories #3 , Cthlulhu Chronicles: The Calling #4 , Sixth Gun #5 ,

new titles: Kick Ass 2: Balls to the Walls #1

1. Cthlulhu Chronicles #4/4(boom) by

The conclusion to this mini series. It ended good , but this issue also suffered from poor edit cuts , you can tell this comic was cut short or just editted down heavily from its original length. I paid $16 for this series , would I recommend this as a trade for the same price? I dont think so. Unless you're a Cthulhu collector , I would say its a borrow at best , no need to own this.

I found the characters forgettable because they lacked depth and affinity with each other , common traits for a 4 issue mini series. The story starts out solid and there's some good thing that happen but they happen to far from between.The art is very good , some of the panels are laid out very well to bring some terror to the pages but again that happens too infrequently. In the end I found this series to fall short of my recommendation.

2. Morning Glories #3(image) by Nick Spencer , art: Joe Eisma

Excellent issue.This arc further entangles the reader deeper into its web of "Oh No you did'ent". The panels just come to life at times , the story moves fluently with Esima's sharp pencil work. The expressions of frustration , anger , fear are exuberant . They continue to baffle you with a situatin and hook your mind with the unravelling. For three straight issues they leave you with a ass slappin cliff hanger.

Simply put , Im not going anywhere , Im in for the ride and want to see this through...

3. Sixth Gun #5(oni press) by

Superb and I was ecstatic to discover this is a 7+ issue series , I thought it was a 5 issue mini but I know there's #7 for subscription... YAY. This issue is straight out of Lord of the Rings:The Two Towers , and leaves you with that as a cliffhanger.. sorry that was a bit of a spoiler but who cares its worth it. This is one of the great series flying under the radar if you like westerns and the undead this was manufactured for you to swallow whole and shit out jelly beans. I can already say I recommend to check this out as a trade!...

4. Kick Ass 2 #1(icon) By Marl Millar , art: John Romita Jr.

Kick Ass 2 starts out very well as Mark Millar would. Highly recommend you read Kick Ass volume 1 before starting , this isnt a great jumping on point. I wouldnt just rely on the movie either , the comic differs slightly in various areas.

There's nothing out of character in this new run , so KA fans will love this too. Its.... wait for it.... KICK ASS. Kick Ass is being trained by Hit Girl as the war between good and evil rises , Kick Ass seeks out to fullfill his dream to form a team like the Avengers or Justice League. This sets up a fun volume...

5. Vertigo Resurrected #1:(one shot)

PICK OF THE WEEK. In a very tough week this book doesnt exactly live up to its reputation nor hype but its still a fantastic read from front to back.

I say it doesnt live up to the bad ass hype because this was "banned" for the title story of Shoot.. its really not that big of a deal. None of the stories are anything that hasnt been already printed in comics so whats the big hub bub?!?! This was a collaboration of shorts that fit perfectly to the Twilight Zone , Tales of the Crypt , Hitchcock Presents , Strange Tales , ... this would have made my anus explode of lollipops and gumballs if this was a full length graphic novel and the stories were full 20+ pages long , a bunch of 1 shots. It still works fine , this felt like the neverending comic book , everytime I finished a story there was another ! and I could believe my eyes when I felt there were no more pages to be had there was still one more story waiting to be read.. amazing. Nothing individually is shoot your load all over the tv awesome but collectively its pretty sweet.

Image comic's The Underground by Jeff Parker , art: Steve Leiber is available digitally online for free. I've been wanting to check this out ever since Blair Butler recommended this on Fresh Ink last spring.

Plot: I wish I could say its The Descent meets Die Hard caz that would make my underpants explode but its not A local wealthy businessman wants to boost the local economy for their small town in Appalache Kentucky by turning a natural attraction , a cave with an intricate tunnel system into a tourist attraction. He secretly hires some shady characters to prep the cave by illegally blowing up parts of it. Local park rangers in charge of this area investigate cross paths with these shady men and begins a chase thriller through the caves.

Me: I enjoyed it. There were no null moments in this nor does it get borish , Parker has a nice touch with the pacing in this story. The villians arent as "evil" as you would want them to be in any action thriller , you need the antagonist whether its human , beast or supernatural to stir up the hate juice a little.

The art is a tad inconsistant to my liking , Leiber does his best work in the caves with the monotone shadowing and tight action sequences. I found the above ground panels to look a like vintage art from the 50s. Parker pieces together a solid , formulaic thriller that doesnt disappoint in the end. If you want a change up from your regular pull , this is well worth checking out. Especially now that its free online!

Verdict Buy/Borrow/Bury: Its a. Borrow. If you want to purchase , it goes for 11-13 bucks on Amazon or Heavy Ink if you look hard enough. It is a cool book to lend out for the same reasons you would want to read it yourself.

Weekend Trade: RED , Zomnibus

Two trades I read was Warren Ellis' RED and IDW's collective ZOMNIBUS which includes three zombie stories.

1. RED(wildstorm) by Warren Ellis , art by Cully Hamner

PLOT: retired CIA agent/assassin Paul Moses just wants to live his golden years in peace but unfortunately he knows too much. The new head of the CIA wants to take zero chance of any of their secrets getting out so he orders Moses to be eliminated. Unaware they only re-activated and awoken the most dangerous CIA agent ever in service who doesnt appreciate the government betrayal.

Me: This was straight to the point , balls to the walls violence and fun. It wont challenge you in any capacity , this is a leave your brain at the door , kick your feet up and enjoy kind of read. Its unfortunately really short and goes by incredibly fast. I get the feeling this was a story Warren Ellis wrote in 10 minutes while taking a dump and the majority audience being dummies that we are , ate it up! and now its a blockbuster movie.

Verdict: BORROW. The price point effects my verdict. Its a $15-18 book and I cant recommend this , they fill up the majority of the pages with "extras" but when it comes to comics and books , we dont want DVD like extras we just want story content , which this lacks. Its still a goofy fun read , and well worth borrowing if you can get your hands on it but I wouldnt make it a top priority either.

****BONUS****
RED prequel comics

Its a 4 issue prequel comic series for the movies , one for each major character.

Bruce Willis: Very good , it carries along routinely but finished very strong leaving you intrigrued and educated about the movie character

Morgan Freeman: Not the impact ending Willis' story had but still engaging.

Helen Mirren: Easily the most empathetic of the four. Victoria is probably the most humane of the four but you can see where the heart turns to stone.

John Malkovich: Mad , crazy ,

Verdict: Again , its a borrow. They are $4 a piece which means this will be a $20 trade probably , I cant recommend this either , the price point cant be ignored. Despite being enjoyable reads , the standards for value has to remain high otherwise we will continue to get "passable" material for $4+ mini series.

2. ZOMNIBUS

Zomnibus is a collective trade of three IDW zombie tales

1. Zombies ! Feast by Shane Mcarthy and Chris Bolton , art:

plot: A prison bus carrying the country's most 8 of the country's most dangerous criminals has engine problems. With two guards and a federal marshall guarding the convicts , they run into some more "problems" and the chaos ensues....

me: I had a blast with this. Its zombie formulaic but it doesnt mean it still doesnt work. From the first page you will guess and wonder whom are the main prototagonists that you will latch on to and it becomes a game of survivor , who will be the last ones standing. A fantastic appetizer in this full course zombie meal...

2. Eclipse of the Dead by El Torres , art : Yair Herrera

plot: a mysterious plague hits the city of Los Angelas and the world and survivors are rounded up at LA Coliseum. It is here a makeshift social structure is developed amongst the survivors but when the parameter is breached by the zombie hordes , everything changes for out odd ball cast of survivors.

me: I would say this is the weakest of the three stories it still was worth the read. I liked the variety in the characters and the bottom line is it was balls to the walls fun. There were heros and villians within this mayhem of dead flesh , and of course lots of zombie slaying. I found this to be another solid appetizer for the main course ahead...

3. Zombies vs Robots by Chris Ryall , art: Ashley Wood

plot: three scientist fucking around with a portal time machine they built leads to a world survived by zombies and robots. 1 human baby still exist and the robots following their core programming must aide her survival. Eventually this stories takes us to a third party ... Amazons! there's actually a teaser to a fourth to leave you craving more but we never actually see it through...

me: First and foremost , I love the sketch book , mono tone coloured look of comics. Im not saying I wish all comics would look like this but sometimes it compliments a story perfectly. It works here , Ashley Wood's pencilling is hypnotic and alluring. I had a great time with the story , a decent rollercoaster ride. Just when I thought i had it figured out , shit hits the fan , just when I think this is FUBAR it settles into a routine zombie tale.. but it all comes together in the end.

FINAL VERDICT: BUY. Individually I might say borrow for 1 or 2 of the titles but for the price? $16-17 on Amazon for this lovely collection is superb value. There's some pin up art in the back from Wood , .. that is cherry on top of the already awesome cake you bought.

Slow day: Hack Slash Muder Messiah but I still havent got my goddamn My First Maniac #4!!!! , Warlord of Mars #1 , Superior #1

1. Superior #1 (icon) by Mark Millar art: Leinil Yu

Kick Ass's Mark Millar kicks off a new series on the eve of the release of Kick Ass 2 , a new Icon series titled 'Superior'.

plot/premise: A lonely kid with multiple sclerosis gets visited by a mysterious talking space monkey during the night and gets granted one magical wish...

me: It was typical Millar , straight to the point delievered with purpose. I was hooked the moment I realized the opening sequence was from a movie that the kid was watching and this was going in a different direction I anticipated.

verdict: Pick of the week in a weak week , but this would've stood out in a good week too. Its Mark Millar , there's a handful of writers that bat 1.000 and Millar is one of them.

2. Hack Slash Murder Messiah (image) by Tim Seeley

We are getting ever so close to the new on going series , this annual and one more next month and then we get to Cassie Hack full time!

This is apparently the unreleased issues #33 and #34 of the IDP series.I havent caught up completely so I feel my review is incomplete. That said this was a fantastic balls to the walls issue tracking back and forth between two story arcs 15 years apart that are connected hand in hand. Once you figure out where Seeley is going you are hooked and glued to this. Perfect halloween comic.

Verdict: Hack Slash has to shit the bed pretty bad for me not to enjoy , this was fantastic.. a $6 price tag for a double sized issue was a little steep but it was a enjoyable book.

3. Warlord of Mars #1 (dynamite) by Arvid Nelson art: S. Sadowski , A.Lucas , cover: Alex Ross

Another reboot project from Dynamite. They like taking old classic series and pumping life back into it , this was a buck debut issue so I thought I give'er a go.

the plot:
story 1: end of the civil war , confederate captain John Carter is now without an army and job with the South defeated. Looking for work , Carter sets out for gold in the southwest where he runs into some Union soldiers and Carter's story ensues...

me: Sadly the comic was as brief as my plot summary. Two short stories to introduce the characters , story and lore of WoM. Not enough comic to do this , both stories fell increidbly short , the cover of the comic is completely misleading caz John Carter is nowhere near to getting to Mars.I appreciate the buck price tag but I would've been happier with a $4 price tag and a double sized 48 page debut issue. (on a side note I wonder if Dynamite and IDW will follow Marvel and DC with the 2.99 flat rate)

All that said , Im not giving up nor dropping this , Im just saying there wasnt enough and thats a good thing. Sadowski's art is very solid , the action sequences were smooth , character designs were good considering he's rebooting established identities. Same with the writing , all in all its a solid debut.

verdict: lots of promise , Im definitely curious to see how #2 goes but Im not exactly waiting on the edge of my seat for this.

Prices for 2011

DC and Marvel have announced they are lowering all prices to their titles to 2.99 ... thank goodness. I was just saying that all summer wishing Marvel and DC would just make all their titles 2.99 caz I think $1per 10 pages is a fair price.

I imagine IDW and other publishers will follow suite caz you dont want to be the most expensive comic on the rack.

This is great , brings back the old days of a flat rate across for all books now.. I would like to see ALL comics sold 2.99.. enough of 3.50 and 4.00 comics.

1. Baltimore Plague Ships #3/5(darkhorse) by

This series has been up and down for me , Ill finish the series caz I have to now but Im not sure if I would recommend this as a trade at this point.

2. Neonomicon #2/4(avatar) by Alan Moore , art: Jacen Burrows

This is a NC-17 rated comic. There's sex , gay sex , rape and more sex and nudity.

This issue kicks up a notch in the intensity and overall plot and as mentioned graphic tone. I felt the supernatural aspect was taking away from the story , I dont think they needed the Cthlulu in this.. it was a crazy issue.

3. I Zombie #6(vertigo) by

The origin story of Were-Terrier , a nice quick little story thats still laying the foundation to this new series. It indeed looks like this will be a Scooby Doo-esq style of comic , but we're still aways from getting there.

4. Whispers in the Walls #3/6(humanoids) by David Munoz , art: Tirsol

They shrinked the print to save money I guess , whatever helps complete the distribution of this book.

This picks up where it left off , we discover much more whom is behind this all and whats actually going on. We also see whom the mysterious figure whom killed Sarah's family was and further more.

This is a great take on the whole monsters and vampire lore story.

I strongly recommend the trade when it comes out.

5. Secret Six #26(dc) by Gail Simone ,

Another balls to the wall , head chopping issue.

I've been putting this off for some time and its not the easiest book to find. So I figure lets finish the BK Vaughan run of Runaways.. vol.2 at the least. I love this series. I know it went astray after BKV left but i havent gotten there yet to judge so..

Sweet Tooth v.1 (vertigo) by Jeff Lemire

I keep hearing so much about Sweet Tooth. I thought Id check it out. Vertigo just keeps pumping out solid title and title , DC just went through massive cuts including shutting down Wildstorm entirely but Vertigo keeps rockin on.

Unwritten vol.1(vertigo) by Mike Carey , art: Peter Gross

Another title that gets talked about a lot and I wanted to check'er out. Im unfamiliar with both Carey and Gross' work which makes this even more intriguing

Red (wildstorm) by Warren Ellis , art: Cully Hamner

I bought the prequel comics for the upcoming movie so I thought I read the original and see what the hub bub is about. Looking forward to this , you cant go wrong with a Warren Ellis title.

Wonder Woman the Hiketeia(2nd printing) by Greg Rucka

One of my favourite covers..ever. Which Im really choked now caz I just missed Greg Rucka at our last ComicCon 3 weeks ago. FUUUUUUUU . This is a very hard and rare book to find. Its out of print for like 7 years so its quite the find when you do find it brand new.

Nice haul today , though Im still waiting for my Hack Slash #4!!! : Widow Warriors #3 , Chew #14 , Stuff of Legend #2 v.2 , Artifacts #2 , Wonder Woman #603

new title: Machete #0

1. Chew #14(image) by John Layman , art: Robert Guillory

*PICK OF THE WEEK* I dont need to sell this comic. This is easily one of my favourites right now and could go down as one of my favourites of all time when its all said and done. This issue carries this arc brilliantly to the next and final issue of this story. Chew is one of the best comics going right now.

2. Stuff of Legend #2(3rd world studios)

Another beautiful comic that nobody knows about. Its either buried for its childish appearance or undiscovered for its indy status. Make no mistake about this , The Stuff of Legend is a must read and a brilliant story. In a day where we get recycled stories in new adaptations and such , this is an original from top to bottom.

It was 2 1/2 months since the last issue , a long wait , went a little fast , wish it was a little thicker if not for the price but for the wait between issues. The golems are introduced , The Boobeyman sets the pieces for his next scheme to entrap the group , the group encounters more hurdles they have to overcome... its just mind melting awesome.

3. Widow Warriors #3(dynamite) by Pat Lee

This was another ok issue that looked great. For the first time I learn that this is indeed only a 4 issue mini series unfortunatly , I was hoping for a on going or longer. More deaths , more shit goes down , it leads up to a big finale.. look at the bloody cover!!! there's a flying decapitated head! and I can tell that it does indeed happen.

The major issue with this series now that i know its a mini , too short for the amount of characters involved. I still was trying to get to know faces and names and its almost over! This needed to be a longer story , its a good story and had lots of potential for something great.

Pat Lee's art is solid.

Ill be finishing the series , I've come this far but Im disappointed that its over next issue. Very disappointed.

4. Artifacts #2(top cow) by Ron Marz

A reminder this is noob friendly , you can jump on board with this series without having read Witchblade before. I never read Witchblade and I dont feel lost at all. That said , it clealry wold add to the experience if you knew the background of all the characters and would appreciate the subtle moments and things.

The story is moving along nicely , this issue you will finally get the official layout of the plot for the entire series. So this is rather important issue. We come to realize the fate of Julie and Sarah's daughter whom were spending a day together at the park in #1 when Aphrodites was stalking them. The groundwork is laid out , we are introduced to all the major players , and the official story begins. Again to add to the noob friendly , each issue has some profiles of the major characters.. its well crafted.

The art is fantastic , even if the story was dipshit moronic , the art is really solid.

5. Wonder Woman #603(dc)

Part 3 of the current arc , I must say this was another ho hum issue. I was rather disappointed in the direction it took and the end product. I wasnt thrilled they just cut off the rogue amazon arc and went with WW going into the underworld of Hades , seemed unnecessary. The art wasnt its strongest point to say the least , Wonder Woman didnt look very commanding .. just didnt hit with me in this one.

6. Machete #0(idw)

Debut issue. Its a prequel story of the legend they call Machete , from the Robert Rodriguez film. Which btw was very entertaining and balls to the walls fun.

The comic however lacks depth and heart , its not much different than the movie but you pick up comics for more detail and its not here.

The bad news: its a $4 comic

The good news : its not your typical #0 of 13 pages .. its a full comic , no different than any other $4 comic

verdict: Its a pass for now , Ill wait and see how #1 does but Im not committing myself to this title yet. I just dont connect to Machete despite enjoying the film a lot.

First off my Hack Slash is STILL MIA!!! grrrrrrrr

My pull : Black Widow #6 , Mindfield #3 , Red one shots ( 4 issues)

News: Wildstorm is being shutdown , by coinkydink my first purchase from Wildstorm Publishing is also my last lol (Red prequel series). Ill review Red after I see the movie caz thats when Ill read the prequels or at least read the main title.

1. Black Widow #6(marvel) by Duane Swierczynsky , art: Manuel Garcia

A new arc and a new era as Liu and Acuna both move on from Black Widow. We now get the writing and pencil stylings of Swierczynsky and Garcia.

Garcia's penciling isnt too shabby. A good face smashing should be a pre-resequite for all comic artists.

The Plot: A deceased vice president candidate's son is obsessed in finding his farther's killers , and Black Widow is being framed for the murder along with the mysterious deaths of other prominant politicians. Enemy agent Fatale intercepts the son to possibly assassinate him for info he may pertain to all of this , Black Widow must protect the man whom wants her dead ... the arc begins...

Me: The story is decent enough , I felt the pacing was good , you start off right into the mix and things pick up furthermore. It was a little silly at times with Black Widow on the hood on the car , I wont spoil it but lets just say I thought somebody was dropping a coiler on the hood of a moving car. The issue ends with what normally would be a crazy cliffhanger BUT SPOILER COMMENT: I just highly doubt they will kill off the title character 6 issues into her new series... OR WILL THEY?! SPOILER OVER.

Verdict: Its not perfect , its not Black Widows greatest start to a story but its still worth the ticket and its still worth sticking with. This new team of Swierczynsky and Garcia might be onto something here. A perfect jumping on point for noobs.

Recommend: Yes. Black Widow is a great series so far and looks like it will continue to be.

2. Mindfield #3(aspen) by JT Krul , art: A.Konat , J. Bolerjack

Mindfield is one of the better comics on the shelves nobody is reading. Its a required taste but its not extreme as a Garth Ennis book , its just the genre: crime , esponiage , terrorist , Telekenesis , FBI ,..etc

This is the opening page to #3 , its intense and graphic from the get go...

     This is definitely not a jumping on point , you must start from the beginning or else you will be lost. There's a lot going on now , the story is going full bore at this point.

    Im rather loving this comic right now , I love the story and its slowly getting better as we slowly indulge ourselves into each character and the plot. JT Krul is masterfully pulling you in , yet keeping the bait at arms length throughout , you just keep chasing that carrot with mouth watering.We have the main character questioning himself , his new team learning to work together and a new terrorist threat using the same telepathetic powers that is suppose to give them the advantage.

     I really like the mini profile at the end of each issue of the main players , you just feel like youre getting better bang for the buck caz I dont think they include it for the total page count.. or do they?

Verdict: This is a fantastic comic , the arc isnt done yet and I dont know if this is a 4 or 5 issue arc , Im not even sure if this will conclude but it should be on your Trade radar if you're already reading the comics. Im sure this is a on going series , Aspen could have something special on their hands here if this title continues to grow and grow

1. Birds of Prey #5(dc) by Gail Simone , art: Alvin Lee , Adriana Melo

Currently one of my few superhero pulls that consistantly delivers in balls to the wall action and edge of your seat story lines.This is easily the best cover art of this volume so far , Huntress looks faptastic! Lady Blackhawk looks wickedly sluttyrefic! In all seriousness You can really tell Gail Simone holds this franchise close to her heart.

A unofficial continuation of the last arc , a two part mini arc begins. White Canary takes Black Canary to Bangkok for some mysterious reasons and the BoP follow her. There's obviously other stuff going on like the completion of Oracles confrontation with Creotes and Savant , Huntress and the Penguin(see above photo) , Lady Hawk and Hawk's health after getting shot by Penguin. It all leads to the cliffhanger ending that will leave you like " whatchya talkin bout , Willis!!??! ". Despite this still being part of a pro longed arc its not a bad jumping on point.

verdict: One of the best $3 super hero comics out there. Its what comics books were meant to be.I highly recommend Birds of Prey.

2. Zatanna #5(dc) by Paul Dini , art: Chad Hardin , cover: Wayne Faucher

Zatanna needed to bounce back this issue , the last issue was the weakest bar none in this volume and also the start of a new arc. Faucher's cover art is solid , Z looks harsh gropeable. Im not feeling Hardin's art , look at the front page...

she looks chinese!! Hardin just isnt meant to pencil Z.

Zatanna faces the three fire demons whom are sent to "test" Z by a mysterious being. This is actually a good story arc , her relationship with her cousin is a nice aspect to keep her book level and down to earth. Zatanna's "new guy" is clearly a cliched douche bag in co-hoots with this evil dude that the audience can sniff out a mile away but things move along , we see whom is behind all of this and whats' at stake. Yes there are zombies in this comic book so thats not false advertisement. Its a classic cliffhanger , you know "how is our hero going to get out of this?" one kind of jobbers.

      Z#4 was a little bleh , Z#5 bounced back big time for her though again Paul Dini's writing was never the problem in the previous issue. Hardin's art imo is a hinderance to this title , Z looks nothing like her covers , again she looks CHINESE!!! which is funny caz usually comic artist have troubles drawing ethnic characters , but he managed to convert a simple white girl into an asian! Dini's stories are compelling and well thought out and staying true to Zatanna , my beef is with Hardin and his inability to draw a caucasion girl with big knockers.

   verdict: Another solid $3 comic from DC , Marvel has a lot to learn from DC's $3 pricing. Im still in.

3. Mystery Society #3/5(idw) by Steve Niles , art: Fiona Staples

One of the best surprises I came across this summer was Mystery Society which I picked up on almost by fluke.I was a little concerned it may have been cancelled caz #3 was delayed 3 weeks ( at the back they preview a comic that came out last month lol) but it finally arrived! when I saw MS this week I almost let out a Richard Simmons "YAY".

I absolutely love the concept. Nick and Anastasia Mystery , yes their sir name is Mystery so you can sense right off the bat this is a little campy. This couple are out to crack down on all the conspiracy theories , myths and mysteries which included rescuing twin tween girls with special powers being kept in cryogenics at a secret government facility for over 50 years. Their rag tag team also includes a goth vigilante chick named Secret Skull along with a robot with a brain of a prominant doctor named Verne. Anyways in this issue Nick is framed for murder during his rescue of the twins and is now a wanted criminal , so Nick and Anastasia go attempt to clear his name. On the other hand Secret Skull and Verne took on their first "job" or mission for the Mystery Society , to solve the mystery of Edgar Allen Poe's missing skull..

This comic is just brilliant fun. I am hoping and wishing this becomes an on going series , I would love to see them crack down on all the great mysteries of the world. Amazing. The writing is witty and intelligent , Fiona Staple's pencil work is sharp , crisps and really compliments the book , I dont know if she's an apprentice of Ashley Wood but she's working that pencil like one bad mother fucker.

Verdict: Its a decent $4 value but because its an indy title I feel even more comfortable handing over my 4 bucks to them. This is IDW's best kept secret and one of the best comics on the shelves that nobody knows about. Im scared MS will get buried and forgotten , this needs to be a on going series please , IDW.

4. Hack Slash #4/4(image) by Tim Seeley , art: Daniel Leister

My order didnt come in this week.Apparently there was a notable mishap in shipment from Hack Slash so I wasnt the only one whom didnt get a copy or the correct copy.

5. Morning Glories #2(image) by Nick Spencer , art: Joe Eisma

#2s are usually down issues , they have to set the tone to a long on going series. You can see they're taking things step by step in revealing the plot and characters , the whole school is still a mystery , they're really baiting the reader with that. Still have much to learn from all the characters , there's many so this could take a few arcs to really get in depth here *fingers crossed* , its moving along slowly but we're getting there.

The headmaster woman is really becoming a major BEEOTCH , there's some legit potential here for a new super hated antagonist. She's got the Lillith Krane from Cheers look going on and she's just goddamn bitchy.

We need to see more from the main players , there's still many questions and things up in the air but its still way too early for me to judge this comic series and arc , this deserves the full 4-5 issue trial. The ending is a good one , a holy shit cliffhanger that was on par with MG #1 , Im curious to see how the fuck they explain this shit!

Big thumbs up for Breakfast Club reference and Star Wars reference!

verdict: Its a $3.50 comic but it holds its value , there's no ads , you get a full 32 page count which is rare. They still have me hooked and sinkered. Im still in for the ride.

6. Whispers In the Walls #2(humanoids) by David Munoz ,art: Tirso

   This was my sleeper smash pick a month ago , it carries over again , back to back PICK OF THE WEEK for this comic. I am in love with the art in this comic book , an indy title in the horror/mystery genre. Tirso whom has that brazilian soccer player thing going with one word name , is a goddamn savant with the pencil. Tirso alone is worth the price of admission.

So this story takes place in Chekoslovakia during WWII? and our lead protagonist Sarah , the little orphan girl on the cover is left at this mysterious facility that seemingly treats people for this puzzling plague. Most of the patients are adults , she is told she's the only child. Eventually the walls begin to talk or ... whisper to her , giving her guidance and she begins to unravel the mysteries of this place. There's creepy shit going on , she befriends some other kids , adventurous moments ,... Fuck , Im butchering this fucking story , pick up #1 and #2.

   I love this comic. The imagery that Tirso creates is haunting and just eye poopingly awesome. The scary guy that appeared in #1 in Sarah's flashback scene to reveal how she became an orphan is genuinely one of the creepiest dudes. I can think of a million other ways you can waste $3.50 on... Worst case scenario you wasted 3.50 .

Verdict: My sleeper pick of the year for mini series. I love this comic.

7. The Muppets: Sherlock Holmes #1(boom) by Patrick Storck , art: Amy Mebberson

c'mon , its fricken Gonzo as Sherlock Holmes and Fozzy Bear as Watson! this has comedy gem written all over it!!!

Plot: The daughter of Rizzo the rat whom plays a sock mogul , Julia , the heiress to this sock and stockings empire falls ill. Her sister Helen played by Jan the hippie hires Sherlock and Watson with the aide or Kermit. This is filled with page to page puns , be warned you will get drowned out with non stop cornball puns that can irritate some. So this is definitely not for everyone , and definitely not as strong a comic as the regular Muppet Show run. This appears to be a collection of one shot cases for this 4 issue mini.

me: I have a huge soft spot for my childhood favourites like Scooby-Doo and Muppets , I adore this shit like a monkey adores his own feces.

Verdict: I dont know if I can recommend this to the general public. If you dont like puns , do not get this , you will want to eat needles covered in thorns. If you're a muppet fan , check'er out , you can do worse with your $3 but if you are a Muppet fan , The Muppet Show comic is a solid series.

8. Time Bomb #2/3(radical) By Jim Palmiotti

So here we are with book two in this 3 part series. These are 56 page double sized issues so its longer than it appears. We pick up were we left off , in modern times a hidden nazi city with a out of date doomsday device is accidentally set off while examining it , the world is doomed. the only way to null this action is go back in time and destroy the doomsday device.. they recruite a special ops team and send them back in time. You are definitely left with a much more gripping cliffhanger in #2.

I personally am not a fan of time travel and Im still not. I feel this story would've worked MUCH better if it was just a time piece back in WWII . I love the idea of a hidden Nazi city built for fallout of their doomsday device , the story really picks up when you see the Nazi's and this city. I actually found the americans somewhat ... not boring but not interesting ( I still dont remember their names!!) lol Seeing the bad guy nazi in charge (fictional character) whom's name I dont remember is a fucken nazi cock sucker.. well done , Palmiotti , well done. It took a while but the pace really picks up during #2 and the story really starts to move in this issue. Again I look at it and think did we really need a time machine story for this? Coming from a sci fi guy too , I just find time travel under minds a good sci fi story like a hidden Nazi city.

Verdict: If time travel and nazis tickle your fancy then this is for you. Its a $5 comic , based on my general value guide of a buck per 10 pages , then this fullfilled its bargain with 56 pages which is way better than $4 comics that offer 25-32 pages ..looking at you Marvel. So , very good value , and its good ol jolly time. Its 2/3 over so you can wait for the trade which will probably be a couple bucks cheaper.

Today's Pull: Cthulhu Chronicles #3 , Widow Warriors #2 , Sixth Gun #4 , Scooby Doo Where are you #1

1. The Calling: The Cthulhu Chronicles #3 (boom) by J. Stokes art: C. Possenti

I've been mixed on this series. It started really well then lagged a little , this issue brought it back on track but I felt it under minded itself at times. Because its a comic book , details have to be rushed , the whole mid section of this issue felt so rushed , you lose all the urgency , intensity and vibe of it. Its almost over , 1 issue left so Ill finish this but Im not sure if Im feeling like a Cthulhu fan.

The art is fine esp the various cover art , I think the stuff Im not feeling good about is story related. The publisher shoudl've perhaps made this a 5 issue series... it just feels like somebody ripped out parts of the book.

Verdict: Its a $4 comic and right now its hard for me to keep a straight face and tell you this is a must buy. Definitely wait for the trade at best and save some bucks even it redeems itself in the final issue.

2. The Sixth Gun #4(oni press) by C. Bunn , art: B.Hurtt

Almost finished. Lots of fun. I dont what else to say but its darn toot'n awesome!

The crazed zombie general and his crew of freaks closes in on the girl whom possesses the crazy one's sixth gun , we find out more about the "guardian" looking after the girl , lots of shit happens that makes me giggle and clap like a trained seal.

I dont want to spoil anything for noobs , caz if this far into this like me , I dont need to tell you how bed wettingly enjoyable this has been. Ill give an overall review when this finishes but this is a must read when it comes out in trade.

Verdict: Unless this series shits the bed in the final issue this is definitely worth checking out in trade. Its a $3.50 comic , its decent value.

3. Widow Warriors #2 (dynamite) by L. Chao & C. Chi-Long art: Pat Lee

This was a good issue that built off #1. There's a lot going on in this story , Im glad its on going caz a mini series would've never worked with so many characters to cover. It still feels parts are missing and things arent coherent but thats to be expected at this stage of a new series. Give it 4-5 issues to establish itself.

The story itself , we get more in depth as the women cross into enemy territory looking for the rival king whom slained their husbands , brothers and sons hence the title. The king tests the women using sorcery and henchmen to oppose their trek. In one dramatic scene the women begin to hallucinate about the lost men and trouble ensues...

The art and mood of this book is unreal.

Eventually the king sends one of his henchmen whom brings a big mother fucking wolf bird to the fight(see cover). We get stome face stabbing , spear chucking , throat ripping violence which is always a good thing for this genre.

Verdict: I have different expectations for different prices , and this is a $4 comic. To be brutally honest I havent wet myself yet during this series but I havent wanted to wipe my ass with is either. If you're not feeling confident about this series , definitely wait for the first trade and see how it looks completed. Myself , Im slightly nostalgically biased towards this because it reminds me of a tv show I use to watch with my parents as a kid called "Women Warriors".

4. Scooby Doo #1 (dc) by Scott Gross , art: Scott Gross :

I had really had a good time with this. First and foremost the gang comes to British Columbia! they came to vacation in the Okanagon and get mixed up with Ogopogo. It was insanely short , it was two short stories.. the second was a short one on Shaggy trying to shave his beard , ends up being an ode to all the catch phrases used in the endings like " I would've gotten away it if it werent for those nosey kids and that screwy dog!".

Verdict: Im a softy when it comes to Scooby Doo , Ill be picking this up whenever I can. I would've enjoyed this comic more if it wasnt for those meddling kids. If you got $3 to burn in your pocket , you're a Scooby Doo fan and you like reading comics then this is your day!!!

Its already september , summer went fast!

decent day: Scarlet #2 , I Zombie #5 , Secret Six #25 , Sixth Gun #3(2 weeks delayed) , Fathom Blue Descent #1

1. Scarlet #2(marvel) by BM Bendis , art : A. Maleev

First and foremost , Alex Maleev's art is worth this book alone , I am not kidding. Its beautiful. The story is nothing new , but its done in a different perspective breaking the 4th wall via Ferris Bueller except instead of pissing off Cameron Scarlet wants blood and justice! ahh to be a teen again.

I have more tolerance for a brand new series that has to introduce new characters , new stories and such so Im not going to be too happy or too harsh until the series establishes itself. I like where this is going and its not where I thought it was going exactly but we're not there just yet but this is definitely worth to jump on board with.

verdict: Stick with it.

2. Secret Six #25(dc) by Gail Simone , art: J. Calafiore

Hooray! the start of a new arc! after two single shot issues , Gail Simone finally has the Six back onto a 4 part arc. This is a tad on the XMen's Savage Land with a hidden world of dinosaurs and such but what idea isnt re-used in any medium *looking at you modern music*.

the plot: Team B , a make shift team being trained by Bane is hired to execute a secret plan in this world , something you dont find out until the last page. Im starting to like King Shark more and more btw.
Team A , is a little dysfunctional to start , Catman is having some personal issues but anyhoo team A is hired by another agency to eliminate team B for again..secret reasons.

me: I love Secret Six , this is another fun , high paced , balls to the wall issue setting up a potential blood bath arc. literally 5 hours ago I didnt care one shit about King Shark , now Im rooting for this guy , he's already blew passed Shazam and ROM on the all time comic book characters lists. If he gets more page time and banter he might move ahead of Sgt Rock and Jughead.

verdict: Im in for the long haul.

3. I Zombie #5(vertigo) by C. Roberson art: M. Allred

The 5 issue arc is over and it was enjoyable. The art really grew on me as it went along now , I wasnt thrilled with Allred when I started this but now I cant imagine this series without Allred pencilling it.

This is a very nice end to the arc though ironically and I cant believe Im going to say this but I didnt see a need to go 5 issues to get to where they wanted to get with Gwen. I guess Im happy they did. The foundation was laid , we now know who she is and what this series is about... lets get our eyes dirty and get on with some deeper stories!

verdict: stick with it.

4. Fathom Blue Descent #1(aspen) by: art:

I dont think I'll be continuing this series. I cant justify my reasons I simply didnt get into it.The art is sweet though.

5. Sixth Gun #3(oni press) by art: Cullen Bunn , art: Brian Hurtt

Very solid issue to the 5 part series.A very underrated series. Imagine Lord of the Rings in the wild west , 6 magical guns created with the 6th being the most powerful , the 6xth owner hunted down the first 5 and destroyed them to make his the only one. The original owner , a crazed general was assisinated and a new owner took its mantle , a preacher. The preacher has passed the gun to his daughter and she now carries the burden of the gun , the general has awoken from death to reclaim what is his.... fun times ensues...

I like to think of Bunn and Hurtt as the poorman's Layman and Guillory connection. They go really well together and they compliment each other. Not at the same level as Chew's dynamic duo but regardless Bunn and Hurtt have a great name calling at the least.

verdict: If you're lucky to get #1 on FCBD then finishing this series is a "Paris Hilton" or a no brainer. I had to buy my #1 and its easily worth it still. Lets finish this baby.

Vagina Days of Summer
Another slow day: Black Widow #5 , Wonder Woman #602

1 Black Widow #5 (marvel) by Marjorie Lui , art : Daniel Acuna

The conclusion to the 5 issue arc " The Black Rose" came to a conclusion. It was a good arc overall , but I felt this final issue was missing something. It felt rushed and heavily editted down to fit the 24 page deadline. Definitely should've been a 40 pager at the least , give Marjorie Liu a proper send off on this series. Daniel Acuna's art was so immaculate and stunning in this arc , soft colours , striking imagery , it all meshed with Lui's writing so well.

SPOILERS:

I didnt like how she escaped from the chair. They built it up to a point where I was thinking "how the fuck is she going to get out of this one?".. turns out , lights go out and she disapears from the chair... MAGIC! of whatever. Part of the great cliff hanger along with being locked into the chair was the Bucky America arrest of Black Widow.. then in this one , it was blown over with little explanation in either it was a rouse or a misunderstanding.. I had to re-read it to see if I missed something. Again hence why I felt it was rushed , not enough detail and commentary.

Marjorie Lui is leaving Black Widow now , Im not sure who's taking over but Ill be sticking around. Even though she's a Secret Avenger and associated heavily with the Marvel universe I really like the non super powered -super hero- espionage kind of stories. Black Widow is as deep and mysterious as Wolverine , this is one of Marvel's underrated new on going series and I hope the new guy doesnt drop the ball on this.

Next issue is a new arc so perfect for a jumping on point for noobs.

2. Wonder Woman #602(dc) by J.M.Straczynski art: D. Kramer , E. Pansisca

I completely understand that old school Wonder Woman fans arent too thrilled about the current arc. I get it , I feel the same way about stuff Im old school about.. but since Im not an old school WW comic fan , this is a spectacular story so far.

They're taking Diana back to her roots and reinventing her before our eyes and kickstarting the next phase of her life. Im still bleh about the costume , I may not have read her comics but I know enough of her to appreciate the classic outfit. Its the red boots , Id be less gay about this if she had the red boots. They've leveled her down a bit , she cant fly , she doesnt have the Superman like strength but she's still pretty bad ass.

Anyhoo.. so her home has been trashed and the Amazons are on the run , WW has come back as the savior. She needs to rediscover her roots and discover herself.. she's like a person whom drifted so far away from her family and needs to re-establish her background In the mean time she kicks some serious ass , and reminds us that her new look hasnt softened her core up at all. She's still the baddest amazon on the face of the planet.

First off , this cover is fucking sweet daddy awesome! too bad its not Chu on it. Otherwise I would frame this faster than a spazzed out nimrod.

This was a fantastic issue , a couple laugh out loud moments , the plot thickens , the story is moving perfectly... what else can I say that everybody else is now realizing ? Chew is the goddamn shizznats.

Weekend Trade: The Surrogates

First and foremost .. the movie is the shits. Read the graphic novel first then watch the movie for shits and giggles to appreciate the GN even more. Sorry Bruce Willis but it stunk.

The Surrogates book was sensational. Absolutely brilliant sci-fi/crime/thriller , the writing , the story , the characters , the art , the colour , the overall feel and look. Amazing.

The vigilante for the anti-surrogate movement , Steeplejack

genre: Sci-fi , crime-thriller , mystery ,

The plot: The year is 2054 , people can now live their everyday life through an artificial embodiment called surrogates , where you adopt an android replicant body and control it from the confines of your home. There is a mysterious figure whom is destroying people's surrogates , trying to evoke a revolt against this lifestyle and bring back the hands on humanity that has been lost. The main protoganist is a detective Lt Harvey Greer whom investigates this serial crime spree against "surries" as they call them. This leads onto a wild goose chase and the mystery slowly unravels itself..

The prophet of the anti-surrogate movement. Its David Koresh gone reggae.

me:     Again ..I fuckin loved it. I remember when this came out and it was being buzzed about , I was tempted to go buy this comic back then , took 4 years for me to finally get to reading this.

     The under layering theme of accepting mortality and accepting nature's aging process. The surrogate is a metaphor for the loss art of social interaction to the internet but also for superficial self image we tend to lose priorities. Harvey's wife had a small but powerful role in the theme. I just embraced the sci fi aspect of this book , it was just enthralling , the concepts and the ideologies .. so thought provoking.

     The pacing was perfect.. just perfect. The crime solving and detective work which leads up to action sequences done so eloquently just kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Im pretty sure I shat myself just a little during a couple parts.

Buy/Borrow/Bury:
Buy. This would be a excellent addition to any library.

I bought mine for $7 on sale so the value is there , but if you cant find one on sale and dont feel like paying cover price , borrow this and get your hands on this , this must be read if you're into sci-fi.

Bury this if you have zero interest in sci-fior graphic novels but I strongly encourage to keep an open mind and never shut the door on any genre or medium.

Why I hate the movie? SPOILERS

- The casting. From Willis to his wife to Canter ... this movie was horribly casted. Greer is an older , fatter dude.. there's a bunch of actors I easily picture in the lead role better like Dennis Franz for example. His wife is suppose to be older and fat too , she was young and skinny.. just a little unhealthy. Too much budget wasted on bigger names , this was an indy comic that should've went with an indy cast.

- The wife should've died , it was more impactful in the book when the wife killed herself , the statement was made. I really hated that they opted for play it safe ending caz we dont want to upset the morons.

- The elimination of Steeplejack , the main antogonist was changed completely for a twist ending.Steeplejack was a great piece of science fiction and mystery.. I understand the desire for the Shalayman shocker points of a movie but c'mon.. that was the back bone of the graphic novel.

- The direction , the movie had no identity , the pacing was way off and it completely dropped the ball on some of the under tones of the book. It felt rushed and lost at times. Weak screen play can do that I guess.

- The Dreads were heavily underplayed in this movie , the set choices were horrible.. broaddaylight in the park does nothing for the tone of the book. It should've been shot at night at the least.

- the decision to alter the role of Canter for the big twist ending. It sounds exciting in idea but you should've just stayed true to the book. It would've played out better.

- In the end , the graphic novel was better. This underwhelms me therefore Im disappointed and dont like it.

solid pull today: The Calling: The Cthulhu Chronicles #2 , Hack Slash #3 , Morning Glories #1 , Zatanna #4 , Birds of Prey #4 , Dungeons and Dragons #0 ....

I also picked up Surrogates tpb for $7! , $23 reg. price 16 bucks off!!, a surprise sale item.. sweet deal for a book I've been wanting to check out. Ignore Bruce Willis' movie abomination. Still have a few graphic novels I have to catch up on before i get to this guy.

1. Morning Glories #1(image)by Nick Spencer , art: Joe Eisma , Rodin Esquejo

premise: Mysterious prep school "Morning Glory Academy" recruits 6 new kids. The comic focuses on these 6 kids , their relationships with each other and their interaction with this academy. Many weird , creepy occurances begin to arouse suspicion of the academy , and the kids begin to unravel these mysteries.

me: PICK OF THE WEEK. I. Loved. It. The character intros were one of the better ones I've seen , every character got a quick intro done in the style that suites their personality. this totally reminded me of Marvel's Runaways , a bunch of oddball teens thrown together but thats where the similarities end. These kids arent super heros ...not revealed yet at least but they're just "regular" kids and its the Academy thats the abnormal entity in this comic. There's so many questions that are asked , so many mysteries that need to be unveiled , thankfully this is an ongoing series , which means they'll take their time developing characters and plot.. this has potential oozing out its ear , I anxiously wait for #2...

am I getting #2?: Yes.

Does this make the $10 pull?: Yes.

price/value: 3.99 .. 44 pages debut issue. Solid value.

2. Dungeons and Dragons #0 (IDW) by John Rogers , art: Andrea Devito

premise: Its a comic book about a Dungeons and Dragons adventure. It also includes #0 for another D&D title called "Dark Sun.". Its your typical group of adventurers including a knight class leader , a dwarf warrior , a elf archer , a spunky rouge thief , and an altered species chick as the mage..together they delve into quests and adventures. Simple.

me: Im an old school dungeons and dragons nerd , and Im also a comic book geek.. this was so awesome. I admit its nothing I would recommend to the general public but for me this is such pure unadulterated nerdy fun. Its a little cliched for part of the party caz you have the grumpy warrior dwarf and the elf archer , the human knight whom is trying to be a great hero. I really liked that they made the mage this new race ... looks like a friendly demon , she's got horns and a tail. It is what it is and its good , it offers me a nice change up for a weekly pull.

Will I be gettting no.1?: yes.

Does this make my $10 pull?: it was a buck.. it probably would.

price/value: $1 = you get two #0 issues in this. Harken back to review of Scourge #0 for 2.50 which was horrible value. Again I emphasize this is targetted for me but D&D not only did it right in context of a #0 but value wise.. thank you IDW.

3. Hack Slash: My First Maniac #3/4(image) by Tim Seeley

This was a solid issue and integral part to the series. All Im saying was .. I was genuinely surprised and shocked with their little "twist" towards the end. Im not sure how I feel about the art decision to draw Cassie cartoonish when she's emotionally vulnerable or happy , she looks like an Archie character. Cassie is back to her gritty , goth like self when she's down to ass beatings and hunting killers. The overall pacing was good , kept your interest peeked throughout right up til the "twist" ... the cliffhanger is solid caz there's no fucking way Im missing the finale #4 next month. No F'n way.

4. Cthulhu Chronicles #2(boom)by J. Stokes , M.A.Nelson , art: C. Possenti

This ended up being a middle filler of a story arc. It doesnt pay off well as an individual issue but when the arc is complete and the trade paperback comes out , it will hopefully fit in gently. They're moving at a slower pace, Im not sure if this is a 4 part or 5 parter but the intensity has to pick up. It doesnt say on the cover , but Im hoping it goes on a little longer.

5. Birds of Prey #4 (dc) by Gail Simone , art: Ed Benes

Runner Up PICK OF THE WEEK
Faptastic finish to the 4 part series ...OR IS IT? its suppose to conclude but it just leads on to the next arc which is directly related. The Barbara Gordon story was concluded as was the Penguin's but the main arc with White Canary.. its to be continued! The battle of the Canaries was epic , the banter was tantalizing , the pacing between all three story lines was done to perfection. *muah* this has snowballed into of the best titles going right now.. LOVE IT.

6. Zatanna #4(dc) by Paul Dini , art: Chad Hardin

Disappointment of the Week

I was a little underwhelmed overall , especially with the art , not a fan of Hardin as of right now. It looked rushed or just lazy , there were no pages with amazing art , this really felt like a rushed project art wise. I felt Hardin took away from the story , nothing extraordinary to the plot , its your cliched superhero cliff hanger but it works here I guess caz Im still buying in but Hardin needs to go or pick it up.

*UPDATE: I read this again , the story read a little better the second time around but I still dont like Hardin's art.

New Comic Book Day: 8/4/10 part 2

Here are the continuing issues I picked up yesterday....

1. I Zombie #4 (Vertigo) by Chris Roberson , art: Michael Allred

This series really picked up in this issue , so many gaps were filled , this was a pivotal issue. Individually each issue seems to awkwardly move at its own pace but collectively everything pieces together smoothly. For the art its like Chew where Robert Guillory's art was looked over to start by many but it grew on you as does Allred's penciling. I wasnt too keen on the art when I first indulged into this but it grew on me though I always felt it suited the genre and title. I really enjoy the ambiance of the book , the campy retro feel of it and it doesnt lose its whimsical allure. We finally get a sense on what the fuck is happening with everybody's role and what direction we're headed not that it detracted from the comics before. The lead character Gwen is making me a necrophiliac for fuck sakes.

Am I still on for the ride?: Yes.

does this make my $10 pull?: I think it does , its a contender in a tough week.

value/price: 2.99 .. its a good book. Esp if you're looking for some variety in your pull. Again we're at the point where you might be better off waiting for the trade but all 4 issues are readily available still.

2. Secret Six #24 (DC) by Gail Simone , art: J. Caliafore

This was a kick your feet up and have a good ol time issue. The last two SS issues have been stand alones , great opportunity to jump on for noobs , well not really but they havent begun an epic arc or anything is what I meant. An alternate universe look at the Secret Six if they were in the wild west. This isnt a time travel thing , its a "what if" type of alternate universe thing. It feels like Gail Simone is using the characters like a play group and doing different skits for these filler issues. I really loved the ending , if you know me , endings like this win me over like a fat chick giving hand jobs.

Im sticking around?: Yes , this is still DC's best kept secret , excuse the pun.

Does this make the $10 pull: Its a strong contender for sure.

price/value: 2.99 .. I had a blast with this issue , a solid single issue buy at $3.

3. S.H.I.E.L.D. #3 (Marvel) by Jonathan Hickman , art: dustin Weaver

This might be Marvel's best kept secret in their line up. S.H.I.E.L.D. has been a pleasant surprise so far , it was completely nothing like I thought it was going to be when I first picked up #1. This is a deeper book than your normal superhero book , in fact I would say this is the smartest super hero book you'll read this year. You'll need to remain sober when reading this. Here's an official summary...

The main story of the first issue is set in 1953, when S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nathaniel Richards and Howard Stark enlist a young man named Leonid with unspecified superpowers into the organization, taking him to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s High Council in the Immortal City under Rome. The High Council reveal that they know "the final fate of Man", and their mission is to ensure nothing threatens the world before this occurs. They have chosen Leonid because he has a destiny

The lead character Leonid meets with fricken time travelling Leonardi Da Vinci , with flashbacks show other founding members of SHIELD like Imhotep , Isaac Newton , battling the likes of Galactus and Appocolypse. Doc Brown will need to sit down for this series... its a must read. Even if you dont like it , its one of those you have to see for yourself kind of deals.

Am I sticking around ?: Yes , its one of the few Marvel titles that survived my purge.

Does this make my $10 pull: Another strong contender , I would have tough decisions to make.

price/value: 2.99.. easily one of Marvel's best buys in their line up. A $3 book that feels deeper and more elaborant than most of the $4 books they carry.

4. Mindfield #0-2 (Aspen) by JT Krul , art: Alex Konat , Saleem Crawford

Premise: The CIA has a new agency for national security.. telepathic cops or "thought police" as they describe themselves. It focuses on two partnered agents, Conner and Erika , and their journey on and off the job with their gifts.

me: Im absolutely enjoying this series. Its dictating its own pace , introducing all the players and devices that partake in this series , its setting the tone for hopefully a long on going series. Connor and Erika and their new team are fairly likeable as they'll earn some sympathy from you... but on duty thoguh both are telepaths Connor is the thinker and Erika is the muscle. Its not blowing the pages off the book but its keeping me glued page for page.

Will I continue?: Yes indeed.

Price/value: 2.99.. good value. Full 30+ pages of Mindfield.

Solid week: Nancy In Hell #1 , Murderland #1 , Whispers in the Wall #1 , Baltimore: The Plague Ships #1 , IZombie #4 , Secret Six #25 , Shield #3 ,

1. Nancy In Hell #1/4 (Image) by Elle Torres , art by Juan Jose Ryp

premise: Nancy is killed by a crazed killer and ends up in hell. Hell isnt what you think it is caz everybody ends up there.. I mean everybody! there is no heaven. Its a F'ed up world with soul eating beast and zombies you fight off to maintain your sanity/humanity. Then there's this bad mother fucker who hunts all the free roaming souls like Nancy.. but Nancy is fighting back! a suprise guest at the end to leave you hanging for #2...

me: I enjoyed it from a "I also liked Tank Girl the movie" perspective , the premise is nothing original but it works. You can re-use cliched ideas but you gotta do it right which usually means keeping it simple. Right from the first page you know who Nancy is and what she's all about , the landscape is laid out quite well , done nicely , you shouldnt get lost in the plot at all. The art is stellar , it gets the dirty deeds done. Clank a beer , bottoms up and enjoy ...

Do I play on getting #2?: I would like to.

If I had $10 does this make the pull?: tough week , I dont think it does.

price/value: 2.99 ... this felt like a standard $3 book. I dont have too many complaints.

2. Murderland #1 (Image) by Stephen Scott , art by David Hahn

premise: A "loving" couple taking up a career as hired assassins or vigilante ass kickers , I havent figured that out yet. Arabber and Meth the two main characters are the hitmen team and we follow them on some jobs. In doing so they also reveal more surprises of their own in terms of "talents" and "abilities". We see their relationship on and off the job and everything in between...

me: I had a good time with this. The art was smooth and the story was nicely laid out , there wasnt a big cliff hanger but I dont think thats what they were looking for in #1. This is a brand new series , so slow intro was called for. Im open for this series to win me over .. still looking for a "WOW" moment or someone to latch onto. My mind wasnt melted from any stand out awesomeness

am I getting #2?: Yes. Im giving this the trial.

Does this make the $10 pull?: hmmm I dont think so , not this week. Tough week.

price/value: 2.99 .. It was decent value , its your standard $3 book I'd say.

3. Whispers In The Walls #1/6 (Humanoids) by David Munoz , art by

premise: Little girl gets placed in asylum/orphanage/centre for god knows what , its part of the mystery. This building is an old building with lots of horrid history. They say the walls whisper to you , the little girl one night hear's the voice and follows its lead to uncover the mystery of this place. During her stay she befriends a mysterious boy despite being told she's the only child in the facility , her new friend takes her to meet other "phans".. this story unravels before your eyes then the next thing you know your eyes are pooping with joy.

me: *My Pick of the Week* This title caught my eye all week , I was ecstatic to pick up the last or only issue on the stand. I really liked this , I like it more than butter melted in bacon fat , the art was fantastic , the mood was eerie and spooky perfect for the story. Scooby Doo should be investigating this place. The bad guy in this genuinely creeped me out , this guy should be chasing Shags and Scoobs through the halls. The story writing was hook and sinker too , the story of this little girl is so perplexing and cryptic that you cant help but follow her on her journey to unveil the truth. Thank god this is a long 6 part series. I cant wait for #2... want want want

Will I get #2? YES.

Does this make the $10 pull?: yup.

price/value: 3.50 ... this was a very good book from an Indy publisher. Not only did i feel it earned its keep but I didnt mind paying the extra cents to support these titles.

4.Baltimore:The Plague Ships #1/5(Dark Horse)by Mignola / Golden , art: Ben Stenbeck

premise: A spinoff from the Baltimore novel series. WWI is over but the vampire plague rages on , Lord Baltimore is obsessed with finding the source and ending the madness. In doing so he must travel on the plagued ships to find his mystery man he seeks... and oh yeah kill vampires , a shit load of them.

me: I liked it caz I like this genre, didnt knock me out of the park though. I enjoyed it but am I hanging on the edge of my seat? do I like Lord Baltimore? not really. Lord Baltimore wasnt designed particularily well , maybe he can win me over in the up coming issues but I found him ...boring and I didnt care for him. This story is missing some heart and soul in its characters , its lead character to be exact.

will I buy #2?: if its a weak week , Im not enthusiastic about it though. Again , Im open for redemption , still lots of comic to go.

Does this make the $10 pull?: No. It was a tough week for competition.

price/value: 3.50.. its ok value. You expect a little more bang for the buck for debut issues frmo established pubs.

Zombies vs Cheerleaders #1 (Moonstone) by Steven Franks , art by various artist

premise: the title says it all. A zombie outbreak in a highschool and cheerleaders along with their shady principal are the last survivors... ensue the bloodshed...

me: Premise sounds fun and cant miss comic ecstasy? I was rather disappointed with the lack of cheerleader vs zombie action , that encounter was barely 2 pages and it was brief and quick. They didnt make use of the artist and the concept of this cheezy title. In a deep market of zombie comics this will get lost and buried in about.. what were we talking about?

Will I get #2?: probably not but Im always open for redemption.

If I had $10 does this make the pull?: No.

Value/price: 3.99.. I paid 3.20 and still felt a little gypped. Definitely not a $4 comic , it would be bleh at $3.. this should've been a 2.50 comic. With online discounts consumers should've really only paid $2 for this.

Im finally caught up!!! in paperbacks that is.. vol.13 is going on right now in comic book form (v.13 due Nov./10). I also read The Stuff of Legend vol.1 The Dark.

The Walking Dead vol.11 , 12by Robert Kirkman , art by Charlie Adlard

NO SPOILERS
         It goes without saying that some tragedy will occur in these volumes .. people die , faces are shot , heads are beheaded ,.. shit happens. Its the way it goes in the world of the Walking Dead. They run into shit that messes around with your head and challenges you to think in their part. My mind has officially been conditioned for Walkind Dead thinking because Im less and less surprised by the shenanigans that occur and find myself spending less time trying to reason with their decisions and just accepting and comprehending them as they go.
     By the time vol.12 ends , aside from being left with your balls hanging out , you'll want to take a step back and just see how far these fuckers have come. Just see how things have changed. Your brain would excrete itself if it was possible.
       I really dont need to rate this series at this point. Even if there were to be a weak volume , are you going to skip it? fuck no. So soon as Kirkman starts to wane Ill let you know , otherwise assume this is all essential reading for The Walking Dead...

The Stuff of Legend: Vol1 The Dark by Mike Raicht , Brian Smith , art by Charles Paul Wilson III

Premise: Its 1944 Brooklyn New York , a young boy is kidnapped by the Boogeyman into his world called " The Dark ". The boy's toys awaken(same rules as Toy Story) in horror as they watched the whole abduction take place. Some of the toys decide to rescue the boy back from the Boogeyman by entering The Dark.When the toys cross over into The Dark , they fully transmorph into their true selves and discover their true potential....

This book is just mind blowingly awesome. Its Toy Story with an edge , with heart , with grit , with character , with purpose .. its amazing. The art is dark and gripping , the story compels you beyond your imagination. The moment these freaky toys speak , you're not creeped out or rolling your eyes , your drawn and subdued to them as they are to each other. You cannot take your eyes off each page and you move forward with them every step of the way...

The boy's favourite toy soldier , The Colonel , rallies the troops for a quest to save the boy.

I love this book. Im currently collecting volume 2 and I hope there's a volume.3 .. this world is just magnificant , its a little bit Oz , a smidge of Wonderland , a cackle of Middle Earth. Its like Oz and WOnderland for the elaborate world of fantasy and esoteric landscape with so many bizarre characters in this realm. Its like Middle of Earth for the fellowship they bonded to rescue the boy from evil forces that oppose them. Just like LOTR they must learn this notion of putting the greater cause before your own. The end result is this hybrid world that leaves you breatheless and craving for more.

The art is so beautiful to look at.

More beautiful art work and layout of this hidden gem.

The fierce chaos as the group engages into battle during their quest. You can see their altered form in the dark.

The characters are so well written , from the moment they move off the bookshelves and explode into the dark. These characters grab your nuts hostage and never let go. You will know each of their characteristics and personalities by the time you close that last page , and you will feel what they feel.

What else can I say? This would have melted my face and stained my underpants if I was a kid discovering this insane tale. Im fricken losing my mind waiting for Vol.2 The Jungle to be released one part at a time. Ill probably buy vol.2 again as a collected paperback caz I definitely want the set or just a hardcover collected edition when its all said and done.

buy/borrow/bury: Buy/Buy/Buy. This book should be owned by everybody. Again even by some chance you dont like it , its such a beautiful book to own and have on your coffee table or lend out. At $13 this is such a great bargain , the artwork alone is worth the price of admission , its such high quality to boot. I recommend this purchase with the highest regard I can possibly give.

A decent week for some new titles: Time Bomb#1/3 , Scourge #0 , Artifacts#1/13 , WonderWoman #601 , I also picked up Alan Moore's Courtyard the prequel to Neonomicon.

1. Artifacts #1 (Top Cow) by Ron Marz

premise: A spinoff of Witchblade , Artifacts is your everyday '13 ancient items and the 13th is the most powerful and some mysterious deadly force is trying to combine them all' type of comic. Some hand picked guardians are to prevent this evil being from obtaining it , anti hero is seeking redemption , so on and so on .. the good ol formula : boobs+blooding fights+ancient shit= cool comic.

me: Now , I havent read Witchblade yet but I didnt feel horribly out of place reading this , it would definitely help but I wasnt left in the bog with my pants down.

Will I be getting #2?: yes , though the plot is cliched its still fun to watch it play out.

If I had $10 does this make the pull? Yes.

price/value: 3.99 ... It was good value , again Im extra critical of the $4 comic , you have to knock my socks off.

2. Time Bomb #1/3 (Radical) by

premise: Current day world discovers a hidden underground city beneath Berlin , built by Hitler as a fallout bunker. Inside they discover the Nazi's doomsday device and accidentally detonate it... the world is doomed. The only chance is time travel back and try to stop this day from happening and since they dont have a Delorean they time travel under the theory of a missing scientist whom developed the "Time Bomb Effect"....

me: I was compelled and intrigued generally. I felt the general concept of a hidden nazi city beneath Berlin was brilliant , I actually felt the time travel idea took away from it.. but maybe they get more into the city in the next issues.

Will I buy #2-3?: Yes

If i had $10 do I buy this?: tough caz this is a $5 book.. but its good. This is a weak week , its a contender.

price/value: 4.99 .. If Im critical of a $4 book , so Im a soup nazi with $5 books. No ads , not until the last page , you get 50+pages... by the end of the day I dont think I'd rather spend that $5 any other way so it was solid value.

3. The SCourge #0 (Aspen) by

premise: Very similar to zombie and vampire horrors except replace them with gargoyles. You have a bad boy cop fighting to survive this chaos and yet figure out the mystery of this plague. This plague is spreading by... you guessed it! bites and scratches .. if you can sense my cynicism then you can sense how I felt about the book in general.

Me: It was issue #0 which are basically mini prequels to the real story arcs. Its a little cliched , the main character seems cookie cutter as well , not sure if this series will stand out in any way. I havent been "hooked" yet.

Will I buy #1? maybe. If its a weak week.

If I had 10 bucks do I buy? I dont think so.

price/value? 2.50 ... poor value. Im sorry but for 12 page prequels things , these should be 1 dollar books. 2.50!?! when I was done I was thinking about other books I should've picked up.

So its official ,Im dropping all Avenger titles. Irony. I got back into comics because of the Avengers and now Im ditching them all. Im just so into the indy stuff now and finding myself less and less interested in the conventional superhero mumbo jumbo. Not to say I dont need my super hero fix , you need balance and variety in your pull list. Avengers just aint cutting it for me right now.

from Beckett Publishing , republished in paperback by Image Comics is Fade from Grace by Gabriel Bensen , art by Jeff Amano.

NO SPOILERS

premise: Its hard to describe a book without giving up "spoilers". What I can say it involves a devoted husband (John) and wife(Grace) , and how one discovers special powers and how their relationship and lives are effected together.

One critique is I felt it lacked dialogue , I went through this book quickly. The pacing was a little abrupt and that could've been because of the lack of panel story telling/dialogue. The art was very intimate and soft with a classic touch it all , much like a young Meg Ryan before she went all Frankenstein. It had an overall 1950s retro feel to it.

My other critique is the stale use of the all american blond blue eyed couple ... it gets tiresome , its suppose to be modern indy , if you're going to do a modern indy comic then be indy and stray away the generic concepts like the all american blond blue eyed couple.

cut to the chase...buy/borrow/bury?:
    Its a borrow for sure. Definitely worth checking out , its a different perspective on the whole love/superpowers thing.
    If you are going to buy this , cover price is $15.. definitely not a $15 book , I bought mine for 11 bucks , Im a little bleh about that.. I would say its a 8 buck book , buy it used if you can. 135 pages.
     Its far from junk and garbage so dont bury this if you have a chance to take it out from the Library , borrow from a buddy or buy from bargain bin.

then I got to vol.9-10 for The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman , art by Charlie Adlard

vol.9 -

After a chaotic vol.8 that shook the foundation of not only the book but my heart and soul I expected a 'calm after the storm' like volume. Just to recap , everybody is dead except; Rick , Carl , Glenn , Maggie , Sophia , Andrea , Dale , the twins , and Michionne.

This volume was focused on Rick and Carl , bringing to light to where Rick is and where Carl is going in this series.Carl goes through the emotional gautlet with his comatosed father. He reassures Rick that he can care for himself , then he blames Rick for his mom and sister's death , he gets mad at Rick for patronizing him caz he's a kid , he feels he's ready to go on his own. It all comes crashing down when he realizes how much he needs his dad still , Rick woke up .. Carl wasnt sure if he was a zombie or not , nor did he care he was prepared to accept his fate at the hands of his zombie father but Rick was ok. It was a powerful moment for Carl , it was a spotlight volume for Carl , Carl stepped forth from the background and became a primary player in the Walking Dead in this chapter.

Eventually Rick and Carl meet up with Michionne , Glenn and Maggie , they regroup at Maggie's old farm. Once again they were planning on making this their permanent home. New visitors change all that in a hurry , a big brute Abraham , a scientist and a couple tag along survivors on their way to DC. After the two groups butt heads , they all agree to head to DC to find answers to the plague and for better security.

vol.10 -

This was a volume that some of the characters come to some revelations about themselves and others , time really shows its age in this volume and the world is clearly taking its toll on them as well.

Early on Glenn finds Maggie hanging from a suicide attempt , this was fucking tragic for my homeboy. Abe wanted to bullet her head immediately but Glenn insisted there's still a chance to revive her... Rick puts a gun to Abe's head to prevent the execution... Maggie wakes up. This shakes up Abe but it also draws some battle lines between Abe and Rick which leaves you unsettled for the on coming chapters.

While at the crossroads Rick , Abe and Carl head back to Rick's hometown since they were near to A) check out Morgan (from volume1) and B)his police station to restock supplies.. while the rest wait. Whilst on their way they get ambushed by some Deliverance hillbilly raping tards... they keep Abe at gunpoint , one wrestles Rick to a face to face bear heg and the other attempts to rape Carl ... Rick's instincts go all Wolverine berzerker rage , he bites into the guys neck and rips his neck apart.. bloodbath ensues with three dead hillbillies with Rick , Carl and Abe A-OK. Afterwards Abe and Rick with Carl laying on his lap open up heart to heart with each other about their zombie experiences .... seemingly finding a mutual peace with each other. Carl also speaks and you get the idea of where all three are at and how far they've come from the person they were.

They do find Morgan alive but mentally and physically unstable due to his boy being zombiefied. They think Morgan kills his kid but he secretly let him loose .. seemingly harmless but I gets the feeling this will re-emerge further down the road in the story. ON their way to the camp they lead back a huge herd of zombies , they lose the car and run back leading the herd back with them.. Dale was all set on staying with Andrea so he can finally start fucking his young girlfriend like a rabbit but they gotta pick up and go again.. Dale's frustration with Rick is over boiling at this point and his distrust with Rick elevates by the second ... is Dale and Rick heading for a lethal confrontation? and the what the hell is in DC? and most importantly , who's next?

New Comic Day: 7/21/10

After an amazing New Comic Book Day last week , it was back to a subdued routine week. Only 3 titles today: Black Widow #4 , Zatanna #3 , Neonomicon #1 .. and more significant drops from my pull.

1. Black Widow #4 (Marvel) by Marjorie Lui , ary by Dan Acuna

Sensational issue to the current story arc "The Rose". Fantastic cliffhanger ending to keep you drooling for #5 , I dont know if this is a 5 issue arc or 6.. I sure do hope its 6. Suffice to say if you've come this far into the series , might as well finish it.

2. Zatanna #3 (DC) by Paul Dini , art Stephane roux

I was a little disappointed that the arc is already over. I was hoping for at least a 4 part arc. It was a good nonetheless , a solid finale to the story. Again , they could've drawn this out a little longer. I hope they focus on Zatanna's co workers and friends more than her Justice Leaguer friends. Zatanna is an underrated character, not just because of her sex appeal but overall.. her goofy yet sexy magicians outfit under minds her comic books , once you indulge yourself , there's no looking back.

Will I continue to buy Zatanna? yes. Her sales have apparently picked up lately.

3. Neonomicon #1/4 (Avatar Press) by Alan Moore , art by Jacen Burrows

The debut issue of Neonomicon and sequel to Alan Moore's Courtyard graphic novel. FBI agents Gordon Lamper , and Merril Brears pursue a copycat serial killer who's on the loose. They go "Silence of the Lambs" and seek help from the original killer whom was a former FBI agent Mr. Aldo Sax in lock up. They then go to proceed on a wild goose chase that leads them to the home of the suspect only to be confronted by some mind blowing shit at the end that will blow your shitty mind.. shit to leave you hanging for #2.

Ill repeat myself , debut issues are always tough caz you have to lay the groundwork for characters and plot. Therefore the end result is usually a slower paced issue than you want which is what we have here... slow but informative and in depth. Its building for a climatic conclusion.. too bad its only a 4 part series , the plot alone has potential for a 5-6 part series.

This is rumoured to be Alan Moore's last graphic novel/comic so this is a must have regardless for Alan Moore fans.

Will I get #2? of couse.

If I had $10 does this make the pull? Yes. Though its a weak week.

Noob Friendly? yes , I havent read the Courtyard and I didnt feel lost at all. That said I plan on reading the Courtyard soon.

price/value: 3.99 .. solid debut issue.. I didnt feel ripped off or short changed.. decent value here.

I also found a place online to buy comics HeavyInk , it works out to be cheaper ordering online than me buying from my local comic book stores. unavailable at the moment. My store had part of their shipment damaged including my one copy of Hack Slash.. warped the spine. Im the only guy who suscribes at my store. Nobody else has it either , I checked out a bunch of shops. Frak.*UPDATED .. finally came in today 8/3/10

Lets just say keep pulling this mini series , its faptastic.. in more ways than one!! seriously , I cant wait for the new on going series in the Fall and I cant wait for the new printings of the Omnibus's .. where have you been all my life Cassie Slash?!

3. Birds of Prey #3 (DC) by Gail Simone , art by Ed Benes

Strong issue. part 3/4 story arc with the mystery woman in white. You will be left hanging by the edge of your seat. If you bought into #1 , 2.. this is a MUST HAVE.

4. Mystery Society #1-2/5 IDW by Steve Niles art by Fiona Staples

Premise: Nick Hammond and Anastasia Collins are the Mystery Society and bring new meaning to "underground cult" status! Stealthily avoiding the authorities, this skullduggery duo spend their time and money righting wrongs committed in the world’s underbellies

Fantastic sleeper hit. I found this by fluke as I was looking through some back issues I saw this catchy cover from IDW Mystery Society #1 , never heard of it. Picked it up on a whim... wow. Faptastically fun. The next day I picked up #2 which came out this week too coincidentally.

Will I get #3? : Im on board 100%

If I had $10 does this make the pull? Its a contender in a tough week.

price/value: 3.99 .. this new refreshing story distracts me that its a $4 comic. Its decent.

~~Thanos Imperative~~ - this is actually getting rave reviews but Im just not into it right now. Trade paperback perhaps.

~~Avengers Academy~~ - numbers game , I have to cut down , I want variety in my pull list. Too many Avengers titles and already pulling Young Allies.

~~X-Men~~ - Mutants vs Vampires ... I still might flip flop on this dependant on how #2 goes but I still dont find myself excited at all for X Men books.

Crazy awesome day for comics. First and mostly my Walkind Dead came in the mail today!!! Im ready to fully catch up with the Walking Dead! now but Ill vlog tomorrow about Walking Dead. Onto the comics.. there were a crap load of new series I picked up. Lady Robotika #1 , Widow Warriors #1 , Chtlulhu Chronicles #1 , Sixth Gun #1-2 , Stuff The Legend #1 ..also back issues I wont review ; Mystery Society #1 (IDW) , Zatanna #1 (DC). Tomorrow I will blog about Chew #12 , Hack Slash #2 , Birds of Prey.

1. Lady Robotika #1/3 Image by Jane Wiedlin and Bill Morrison

Premise: An Alien civilization obsessed with 80s popculture kidnaps Jane Wiedlin to perform a rock concert for his majesty.

Sounds crazy good? still does but the execution is a little sloppy. Im willing to cut Jane a break , its her first comic book ? Bill Morrison formerly from The Simpsons so you can get a sense of the style involved.

Will I get #2? I dont think I will unfortunately.

If I only had $10 does this make the pull? no.

price/value? $3.50 ... its a fun book , not sure why this book is more expensive than Chew , Walking Dead , and Turf. Hard to justify in comparison. I want to really like it caz Jane Wiedlin is one of the sweetest rock stars ever. Im finding it really hard to recommend this book

2. Cthulhu Chronicles Calling #1 Boom by Michael Nelson , art by Johanna Stokes

Premise: supernatural horror series with a decidedly modern spin from superstar writing team Michael Alan Nelson and Johanna Stokes! A cruise ship comes to port, hundreds are aboard dead - but why? Clayton Diggs is a pharmaceuticals salesman who discovers his sister has committed herself to an insane asylum; she's checked herself in, fearing she'll hurt herself or someone else.

This shit picks up half way through , I was getting a little nervous that I made a bad call on this pull but it came through towards the end to hook me like a pea brained trout.

*edit UPDATE I read it again. Wow. Its a solid solid premiere issue. Absolute hidden gem.

will I get #2? Yes , started slow but ended really strong.

If I had $10 does this make the pull? It would be a yes in any other week. Very tough week to compete in.

price/value: 2.99 ... it was a solid debut issue. First issues are always difficult but this finishes strong and left me hanging .. mission accomplished.

3. Widow Warrriors #1 Dynamite by Pat Lee , Loyld Chao

premise: For generations, one fiercely-patriotic clan of warriors - the 'Yang' - battled bravely in the nation's defense. The widows of the clan pleaded with the Emperor, whose own court had become weakened by corruption and greed, to send reinforcements. But none came. Soon, the last remaining Yang soldiers were overwhelmed by a sea of bloodthirsty invaders.

Distraught and incensed, the Yang widows - a few hundred strong and many of whom also seasoned warriors - took arms and set off to the western border to kill the new king.

This totally reminded me of an 80s cantonese show from Hong Kong my parents use to watch and it was one of the few shows I liked. " Women Warriors"

will I get #2: yes. I still have hope the pace and depth will pick up.

The Premise: Imagine Lord of the Rings in the wild west and exchange the rings with guns. 6 mystical guns were created , the 6th being th emost powerful... finds it way into a preachers' daughter's innocent hands. Now she is being hunted by the guns original owner and his horde of undead.

Outlaws , undead armys , crazed zombie general , a magic gun , ... fuck this shit just got real!

Will I get #3?: uhh hell yeah. What the hell is going to happen!?

price/value: 3.99 .. #1 was originally released on Free Comic Book Day but I wasnt around for that so I had to pay for this one. One of the better $4 comics.

5. Stuff the Legend: The Jungle vol.2 part 1 Th3rd World Studios by Mike Raicht , Brian Smith , art by Charles Paul Wilson III

Premise: think Toy Story + Wizard of Oz + Lord of the Rings + Toy Soldiers + Muppet Babies.... what does it =... fricken amazement. Its in much more grittier ,darker tone than some of the titles mentioned.

If I had this as a kid my brain would explode from the overload of imagination and creativity.

will I get #2? fuck yeah , ill be pissed off if I dont.

1. Turf #1-2/5 Image comics by Jonathon Ross , art by: Tommy Lee Edwards

I heard a lot about this 5 issue series so I jumped on board a week after #2 came out. Image might be my favourite publisher right now , I am loving their non super hero titles ; The Walking Dead , Chew , Hack Slash and now Turf.

The Premise: Set in the late 1920s in New York during prohibition , a turf war amongst mafia families is on the horizon hence the title "Turf". 4 mafia families have run the crime syndicate in Manhatton for years .. and now a new family wants control of the entire city , the Dragonmirs ... a family of vampires. Eventually a third party wants in on the action.... aliens. All the while two seperate protagonist mob boss Eddie Falco and Gotham Herald reporter Susie 'Dontknowherlastname' investigate the mysterious disappearance of significant mob families. Mobsters v Vampires v Aliens v Cops= goods times.

Writing:Ross thought up the idea of lets have mobsters fighting with vampires over gangland territories ... and then we'll toss in aliens. This guy is a mad genius caz it works!! He focuses on two lead characters and balances it all quite nicely. There's pleny of dialogue but its there to move the story along and its done effectively.. those who complain go buy a colouring book you morons.

Art: Tommy Lee Edwards is working magic here with Ross , too bad Jonathan's name isnt Pamela. The art gets gritty when it needs to be , its dark and eerie when it needs to be , superb job at capturing the time period and atmosphere overall.. the style suits the story perfectly.

Gotta love the play on words title!

Will I finish the series?: hell yeah. Did you not read the formula to this series?

recommend: Yes. Its always exciting jumping on a new series and seeing something special developing. This is such a great hybrid mix of horror/sci-fi /mobsters .. you gotta check it out for yourself.

noob friendly: yes. New series.

price/value: 2.99.. superb bang for the buck , they also tossed in some pin ups.

2. Young Allies #2 by Mckeever , art by: Baldeon

Its a good super hero read. Its another teen superhero group attempt. Im not forseeing epic greatness but its not the car wreck it could've been either. Take it for what it is , a fun exciting read.

The plot is decent for the genre , a group of deviant teen villians called the Basterds of Evil want to kill as many people as they can for no other reason than they are evil. The Young Allies whom have not really been formed yet meet up coincidentally trying to stop them. As the story arc moves along we learn a little more about everybody including the Basterds too. The Electro cameo was good , it was like Maury Povich 'Are you my baby's daddy?' , it was also a reminder that a middle tier baddie like Electro can ass wipe them. Though its not a complex book there's a lot on the line dealing with this new threat to give the reader a sense of validity.

Team members: Firestar has a sentimental attachment to me , she's still wearing the same lamo outfit as she did on SMAHAF* , I see she's still in college 30 years later! Gravity , I dont know what to think of him thus far. I really like Nomad and Arana , Im starting to think this should've been a duo comic , I like their stories ; neither have super powers , young and naive , troubled history ,.. they have good chemistry together. Finally , introducing a new hero; Toro.. bleh.. a big fracken Bull boy... whipdee.

will I be getting #3?: yeah , the worst case scenario I can pass this off to a young comic reader.

recommend: Yes , esp for young young readers looking for a teen superhero group to follow.

noob friendly: Yes.

Price/value: 2.99 .. ok value , they have the preview for Shadowland in this too which to me is misleading when it comes to page count.

Fantastic week , lots of goodies. Today's pick ups: X-Men #1 , I Zombie #3 , Secret Six #23 , Scarlet #1

1. X-Men #1Marvel comics by Victor Gischler , art by: Paco Medina

I dont collect X titles but I figure I would give this new series a try. I picked up the variant cover , too early to critique the story arc but a couple things I can comment on ...

the premise: A new terrorist threat hits San Francisco ... Vampires. Seriously a blood bomb goes off downtown and sprays a bunch of people with the vampire virus... shit just got real! . The X-Men are called in to investigate as one of their alumni Jubilee is seemingly targetted.

Will I be getting #2?: .. yeah , they didnt lose me so that says something. However Im not hanging on the edge of my seat just yet either... maybe Im bored with vampires and X-men.

pet peeve: ... 4 pages of advertisements for other Marvel titles. You can easily fit all of them onto 1 page. Ridiculous.

price/value: 3.99 .. Im very critical towards Marvel's price value , I really would like to see more bang for the buck. Enough with the ads. They added a teaser for Shadowland , the first few pages.. Im not too crazy about teasers but its better than ads I guess.

2. I Zombie #3 Vertigo comics by Chris Roberson , art by: Michael Allred

UPDATED 7/8/10: I picked up #1 today , still havent found #2. It helped lay the groundwork and fill some gaps for me. For 1 buck its a fantastic buy at the least.

Picked this up on a whim. I was looking for something different thats non superheroish. Its hard to judge based on one comic but ....

The premise: Gwen Dylan is a young attractive zombie , and in order to maintain her sanity , she must dine on one brain per month dead or alive. She's not a killer so she works as a grave digger to get her snack on ... she doesnt enjoy it one bit. The side effect is she absorbs the memories of the brain she eats and in doing so she gets herself into some unfinished business for the departed.

The writing: is a little tweenerish , I guess Im not the target audience.The potential is there , good looking zombie that I would seriously boink with a weird eating habit. Anytime cute zombies need to eat brains to solve mysteries is ok in my book.The mysteries and puzzles are catchy , the characters are so odd and alluring. So far so good.

The art: Im not sure if I like this style but it suits the writing. Definitely it has its own characteristics so thats a plus. Maybe its more the character designs that fail to wow me , I dunno but it can easily grow on me if the stories pick up.

There's so much potential here for a long lasting unique read. Gwen Dylan is an interesting character that I would like to see them develope further , this has the making for something special .

Will I be buying #4 ?: yeah . Its on my trial list still ....

recommend: yes , if you can find #1 for a buck.. hell yeah , its worth checking a title so bizarre and outlandish.

noob friendly: yes brand new series.

price/value: 2.99: ... Its ok . I really need to see #2 to fill the gap between the two issues.

3. Secret Six #23 DC comics by John Ostrander , art by: RB Silva

This was a one shot issue that took place right before #19. Because of this I can rate this 1 issue book .

Plot: An old cliched set up.. secluded island for maniacal thrill seeking killers whom hunt down armed human prey for game. Remember that Ice Cube movie where he's being hunted by big game hunters? same shit. The guy running this island falsely hires the Secret Six to lure them into this trap to be his prized game for his cliental. Ensues some comic book fun...

Gail Simone took this issue off .. Im really hoping this is a vacation for Gail. Big dropoff in story from the previous arc.

The art was mediocre , for what the plot was .. there was some cool scenes. Im willing to give the artist a mulligan because of the source material , it wasnt the greatest story.

This will be a forgettable issue when its all said and done.

Recommend: ....no. However I strongly recommend the Secret Six overall but this issue is optional.

Noob Friendly: ..yeah , there's zero substance to the story so you dont need to know shit.

price/value: 2.99 still one of the best bangs for the buck. This was a one shot issue.

4. Scarlet #1 Iconic by John Bendis , art by: Alex Maleev

This was on my pull radar for weeks. Bendis and Maleev have been working on this for sometime and has garnered some attention along the way. It delivered.

The art was brilliant , I love the water colour look , it looks so effect/ Maleev has a wonderful touch , I thouroughly enjoyed the atmosphere Maleev created , dark , gloomy , gritty ,...etc. Scarlet's look reminds me of a young Molly Ringwald with her appearance.

The writing was good , a cliched origin story.. girl loses love of her life , loses faith in justice and loses hope in mankind and decides to fight back. I enjoyed the 4th wall perspective , she was Ferris Bueller talking to the reader and walking them through her story. Feels like a memoir or something. Right from the opening scene you will say " this shit just got real". Bendis is one of the best in the business for a reason.

They added commentary and invertiew with Bendis at the end. They also added a couple pin ups as well , overall a nice debut. Its a unique and beautiful looking book , it might get lost in the shuffle of Shadowland and the Heroic Age but it has the potential to hold its own. Im very curious to see how this plays out... I havent a clue where this story is going but Im in for the ride.

Will I buy #2?: Yes I will.

noob friendly: brand new character and series... doesnt get more noob friendlier than that.

price/value: 2.99.. Yes , a good buy , the art itself is worth the admission. .

First Ill do Spoilers then general commentary: I must say I am a novice Lantern fan. I only read Green Lantern Rebirth thus far.. I have very little knowledge of Green Lantern.

Spoiler Alert!

   I really liked the gritty edge to this show ... characters die!!! which is always a plus in my books. The betrayal by Boodikka was completely unexpected by me! I must be slipping.. I was genuinely shocked and suprised!!! just a great twist.

   They did a fantastic intro to Sinestro , showing his downfall into the evil sinister villian we know him as. The creation of the yellow lantern.. very epic. You really get a sense how colossal their battle was with the light show they put on in space with all the guardians and lanterns watching on with their fate at hand .

    The whole Green Lantern corps is very reminiscent of the Jedi Knights in Star Wars , there's a high coucil , and the Lanterns are the guardians of the universe.. Sinestro conspires to over throw the Council to dictate a new order. The investigation of the Lanterns was very Star Wars prequel like as well.

The action sequences were great! the tunnel chase was magnificant this is where many Lanterns bite it. So intense , high paced , great hero shot for Hal Green to emerge. This movie only endorses green love for the Lanterns , its must see.

This is the re-telling of the origin story for Hal Green's Green Lantern and the Green Lantern Corps. Hal Green is given the ring of a dying Abin Sir , the Lantern Corps investigate his death which turns out to be a murder. Green Lantern learns the ropes from the elite Lantern of them all... Sinestro. Its a great movie for old schoolers and noobs.. it may feel dumb down for the old timers at the same time some material might fly over noobs' heads... nothing that great action and drama cant compensate for. With the live action movie coming up this is a great time to educate yourself into the Green Lantern lore and this movie will have you covered.

Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!

Rating: 8.5/10 ... the only reason I dont give it a 9 ... it was only 74 minutes minutes... they could've pushed it to 90 minutes and added more depth to support characters.

Recommend: Yes , very highly for all ages. Though characters die its not graphic.. kids can easily watch .. give me a break , you cant shelter kids from death. If you're going to get into the live action movie educate yourself in the Green Lantern lore.

Buy it/Rent it/Bury it: For Superhero geeks ...Buy it. This should be owned in one way or another. Its a great superhero animated movie.

Weekend Paperback Pick Up : 7/04/10

1. Y The Last Man vol.2 'Cycles' vertigo comics - written by Bryan K Vaughan art: Pia Guerra

Since I didnt write anything on vol.1 Ill just do an overall commentary so far.

Spoiler Alert !

So after the landscape of the book was laid out in volume 1 , I had my ideas on what would happen so forth.

They built themselves a little "Wizard of Oz" crew which is a prerequisite for any good adventure story. You have the naive yet outspoken protagonist , Yorrick , you have the brave protector in 355 , then you have the brains and morality in Dr. Mann .. and of course Ampersand the capuccin monkey.

They had me for a sec when 355 cracked her head from the jump , I thought she was dead! , when Dr. Mann woke up and they showed 355 in a pool of blood with her head cracked open on a rock. I thought OH SNAP! she survived but was incapacitated for the remainder of the volume ..though they did hint she might be developing feelings for Yorrick .

I admit I was a aloof when it came to Maryville , didnt occur to me until Sonia confessed to Yorrick they were convicts. They hinted towards this secret to the town and I didnt have any ideas. Btw fyi I would bone Sonia faster than the speed of light. Anyhoos , Yorrick caught me off guard on his reaction to the news esp because they were becoming intimate just prior . He was much more authoritarian about it than I imagined.

Again I was surprised when fricken Hero showed up at the house.. the Daughters of the Amazon caught up! the Amazonians and the convicts have a standoff over Yorrick . The convicts stood by Yorrik even after Yorrick blasted the convicts and Victoria making a strong speech. Leading to an all out battle royale? I was on the edge of my seat...

It didnt manifest like I hoped. Yorrick faced his sister and enemies face to face by himself. I was very surprised on how abrupt Victoria's character came to an end , they were building her up as a nauseating antagonist. Yorrick disheartened by his sister's betrayal kneeled to Victoria as she prepares to execute him. Victoria's end came at the hands of Sonia , an axe to the skull ! faptastic!.. which in turn Hero retaliated Legolas style with an arrow to the heart of Sonia. It was over like that. The action sequences in Y The Last Man arent its strong points nor should it be.

The most shocking element of volume II was the confrontation between Hero and Yorrick. Just like Yorrik thought I didnt think Hero was fully brainwashed but she is. Now after the showdown and meltdown it looks like Hero will be the tragic villain to oppose Yorrick for the upcoming volume(s). We will see...

Bryan K Vaughan really grabs your attention right from the first page with the cop pointing the gun at her head then with the whole countdown and it only picks up. A story of a guy and his monkey trekking across the map looking for his family and girlfriend.. sounds awesome right? oh yeah he and his monkey are the last two male animals on earth. Take a wild guess what kind of crazy shit they get themselves into.

Im not crazy about Pia Guerra's art. I dont like how he makes everybody looks alike and overall character designs were blech. He doesnt know how to draw an asian woman , I had no idea Dr. Mann was asian until they actually mentioned it. His demo sketch looked better for Dr. Mann (they included some of Guerra's sektch work as a bonus). Guerra isnt horrible and he complimented Vaughan fair enough , but it could've been better and/or just not my cup a tea I guess.

When you read Y The Last Man the bottom line you will be captivated , humored , intrigued , infuriated ,...etc which to me equals awesome entertainment.

recommend: Yes. Adventurous sci-fi with suspense , humor and overall entertaining.

noob friendly: Like all series , start from the beginning. Its a 10 volume series in TPB form. .

price/value: Great value. I recommend highly buying the TPB online, you'll save a bundle. $15-16 cover price but you can get them at $11-12 from Amazon.ca. Free shipping over $40.

Last week I only picked up 1 title , I was only going to pick up 1 this week but its 'new comic book day' and I want me some comic books to read so I decided to pick up a few more including the highly anticipated Wonder Woman #600 , Death of Dracula #1 , and Secret Avengers #2.

1. Wonder Woman #600 DC comics - Dont worry NO SPOILERS !

First let me state that I am not a diehard WW fan , I dont collect her comics and dont know everything about her. I think she's fricken epic and Im always up for some narley harsh wicked Wonder Woman comics. #600 is a collaboration of short stories by various teams of writers , artists , inkers, editors...

story 1: Valedictorian by Gail Simone , art: George Perez

I liked this best I think. It was one of those "was that good and I dont know it or was it bad and I cant tell" kinda episodes .

story 2: Fuzzy Logic by Amanda Conner

Conner does both the writing and the art. I liked this one least , the story with Power Girl and WW was too girly , I thought WW was going to tell her what brand on tampon to pick up.

story 3: Firepower by Louise Simonson , art: Eduardo Pamsica

Superman makes his appearance to help battle Nikos Aegeus , this one totally felt like an episode of Super Friends but with awesome art. It was a fun chapter.

story 4: Sensational Wonder Woman by Geoff Johns , art: Scott Kolins

I liked the art style here for this particular spot , not sure how I'd feel if an entire series was done like this. Story was a little hokey but thats what these anniversary issues are about. Celebrate the legend.

story 5: Main: Couture Shock by J. Michael Straczynski , art: Don Kramer.

The concluding story is the main story arc that will continue forward. This is where we see Wonder Woman's new look in action. Really nice action sequences and ok start to a era of WW. 601 will be very interesting.

DC did a good job with their big three anniversary issues (BM700 , SM700). They were good reads with lots of goodies, if I didnt baby my comics I would love these 3 issues as bathroom reads! I felt WW600 was the best of the three. As a casual fan and reader of WW comics , I really enjoyed the variety of stories , the different art styles , writing styles , the various pin ups of the princess of bad ass; Which leads to the "controversial" new look:

My review on costume: 1.5/5. Blehs: Jacket look is dated and boring for the legend , black leggings is blasphomy and the new tiara is just not gay enough. Mehs: Body suit is ok but is it an improvement? , the battle bracers are alright too. Hell Yeahs: she looks good in a fight dressed like Debbie Gibson.

Recommend: Yes. Pick this up and enjoy an old school style comic book read.Tons of fun.

Noob friendly: Yes. This is a perfect jumping on point if you want to join in on a new Wonder Woman run. There's no actual #599 .. they ended vol.3 (#44 is the 599th WW comic) and are returning back to vol.1 , its a reload for a new era.

Price/Value: 4.99/ Solid value. John Travolta may disagree that there's $5 comic books worth its tag but gawd damn! this one comes close.

2. Death of Dracula #1 ( written: V. Girschler , art:G.Camuncolli) MARVEL comics- No Spoilers

This is the prelude to the upcoming X-men #1 that will depict a major war between the X-Men and vampires.

This is the story of Lord of the Vampires , Dracula , his sons Janus and Xavus and the sect of vampires he rules over. Basically members of the vampire elite council , its like a mob meeting except with different groups and species of vampires including Dracula's sons Janus and Xarus , the latter whom feels Dracula is holding back their potential to rule earth. Unknowing to Janus a contingent of sects led by Xarus plan a coup to overthrow Dracula and take the vampire empire into a new world.

Its setting up the whole vampires vs mutants war. Shit Im not a vampire guy but I liked it , Im interested in the whole Marvel world of vampires now. They set it up pretty cool.

recommend: yes if you plan on collecting the new X-Men series. Its also a decent read for a stand alone 2 part series.

noob friendly: yes. This is the beginning of an epic 6-10 month story arc so jump on board now if mutants vs vampires intrigues you.

price/value: 3.99/ It was a full 48 pages , good read , I would say definitely a $4 comic , good value.

3. Secret Avengers #2 (writer: Brubaker , art: Deodato) MARVEL comics - No Spoilers

Another solid issue of Secret Avengers. Simply put this series is easily fullfilling my 4 issue trial.. Im fully imbersed into this arc.

The team is on Mars looking for NOVA whom wasnt responding from his recon mission. The team does some digging literally and discovers a little more to the whereabouts to their serpent crown and Nova.

What can I say? Im liking this oddball mash up of Avengers. Moonknight , Black Widow , Valkerie , Nova , Steve Rogers , Beast , War Machine , Ant Man. THey go to Mars to start some shit , they run into some bad mother fuckers ... Im having a good time. I anxiously wait for #3..

recommend: Yes. Its a espionage superhero series , currently in space , action ,...etc

noob friendly: If you start from #1 it is. If I could only recommend one title for somebody looking to get into the Avengers , Secret Avengers would be one of the titles.

price/value: 3.99/ O.K. value I guess. All Im saying is Secret Six is a $3 comic and thats as good if not better than the Avengers. $4 comics can at least be 40+ pages.

UPDATED:I just read...

Walking Dead vol.6 'This Sorrow Life' by Kirkland , Adlard

SPOILER ALERT!

After last issue I was distraught , angry , frustrated , ... Kirkland was pulling my emotional strings like the good puppet I've become.

When Governor offered Michonne to fight in the pit with her own sword back I just knew she was gonna off the other guy's head and she did like a ripe melon. I wasnt sure where they go with it after that but they tackled her and subdued her again back to her cell. Fuck but damn that felt good for Mich.

One of Governor's body guards , Martinez , comes to rescue Rick with the help of Glenn. I thought the doctor was going to be the one who breaks Rick out but I also was expecting this scenario too. Glenn , Rick , Martinez and Alice 'the nurse' go rescue Michonne next. Martinez is leading the way .. and this whole escape is going easy...too easy.You can kind of smell whats happening but like the survivors you rely on hope.

They go get the Doctor and they make their escape... except for Michonne whom cant leave until she gets her payback. The group carries forward ,just outside the compound the Doc immediately gets taken out by zombies. Wasnt expecting the doc to get it here.. I thought he would make it back to the prison.

Back to Michonne... best payback EVER. This is what I was waiting for with giddy eyes!

So after having to endure 4 days of brutalized rape , Michonne went to pay Governor a visit and boy did she ever. Adlard pencilled this scene slow and methodical just like Michonne was planning on mutilating , torturing and brutalizing Governor. She had her way with him in horrid , bloodshed of carnage beyond anybody's warped imagination. By the time his guards came , he was left in a pool of blood missing limbs , eyeball , tortured beyond recognition but when she left he was still alive techinically and so was his zombie daughter.

Michonne caught back up with Rick and co heading back to the prison , I wasnt expecting this scene.. the prison over run by zombies again. The court yards full , the fence wide open , ..nobody in sight. Turns out everybody except Otis was ok they were all hiding , they had to clean out the prison again.. so a couple pages of good ol Zombie stomping. I was a little suprised that they killed Otis without prominence , felt like they were building him up for some kind of betrayal on Tyreese , Michonne .. with his racism.

After a few days Rick notices Martinez had disappeared and this was the other scenario I suspected .. the planted mole. He was to locate the prison , recon Rick's colony. Rick in an instinctive surge he went after him in the RV , found him and rammed him with the RV. Rick confronts the paralyzed and dying Martinez. They argue their cases which turns out to be the same case.. survival for yourself at all cost. Rick discovers he has become a product of the world they now reside in... a killing machine , all to protect he and his family at all cost and its not even on his conscience. One of the themes Kirkland deals with .. the loss of humanity , where it goes or how it evolves... Rick Grimes is now a shadow of the guy whom appeared in the first page of volume.1.

It ends with Rick dealing with the before mentioned self realization talking to Lori. Then Rick calling for an emergency meeting with everybody to notify that this other colony will be coming someday and will be heavily armed. .. to be continued.

SPOILER OVER!

That was everything I was wanting and expecting... I am one happy camper now. Everything is back to normal in Walking Dead universe.

The pacing of the last two volumes was high intensity , I was on the edge my seat throughout.. I cant tell you how many shout out loud moments I had. Though the story arc is still left open for down the road the short end of this story arc was mind copulatingly awesome with a side order of Oh Hell Yeah!

The story arcs are getting more intense by the volume and the consequences are getting bigger.

recommend purchase: buy this series online from Amazon.ca , much cheaper than buying from a store.

Weekend Paperback Pick up: 6/27/10 part I

Wednesday is new comic day , and I like to read my graphic novels on the weekend so I figure Ill blog trade paperbacks on the weekend and new comic book pick ups on wednesday. I picked up a few titles at Haggle Day at Metropolis Comics (Walking Dead v.5-6 , Y The Last Man v.3) but I only read 1....

1. The Walking Dead vol.5 ' The Best Defence' TPB

SPOILER ALERT!

Wow. After a somewhat subdued vol.4 only after a chaotic vol.3 , Kirkland kicks up the intensity a few notches again. It starts out from where we left off , some in house drama and lingering feelings , everybody going on with every day life at the prison. Rick and Glenn spot a crashing helicopter , so they with Michionne decide to recon the crash site. They get there , problem is somebody beat them to the survivors and it wasnt zombies.

They trek to the nearest town and discover a small colony of survivors run by a seemingly level headed nice guy named "Governor".. this turns 360 almost immediately as he doesnt waste time after leading the three into a private room , he gets to the point to telling the three that they will be zombie food for their colony's entertainment.

From here the reader along with the characters suddenly forget all the shit problems they had with each other and realize how fucking bad it could really be. Glenn sitting in his cell repeating himself " I wanna go home , I wanna go home".. he wasnt even part of the fucking problem back at home. Goddamn.

We learn a little more about the governor , that his daughter has zombied up and he now has to feed her human remains while caring for her like things were "normal". He also has an odd collection of "living" zombie heads that he just sits and stares at for entertainment. You also see how the colony treats the Governor as their protector and friend , they look up to him like everybody use to with Rick. Gives a little understanding of The Governor but doesnt change my desire to cut off his balls and face rape him with a crobar. Fuck I hate this guy.

Fuck twat shit cuntrod. This guy just pissed me off like I havent been this pissed in awhile. The asshole cuts off Ricks' right hand , rapes the shit out of Michionne and beats Glenn for pleasure though I thought some weird banjo deliverance scene was on the horizon. This guy is just a fucking pyscho asshole clearly lossed it.

We do get introduced to seemingly a new character that of course is the colony doctor whom despises the Governor too. This character's role appears a little predictable. Here's my guess before I read on: Doc will help Rick escape while Gov and crew go to attack prison.. they overthrow remaining guard and scurry to the prison to help. Big battle.. many characters killed , Rick and co arrive to turn the tide of the battle.. .Michionne gets her revenge on Governor with brutal slaying. Prison defence is down , ruining safe haven , ... Rick's group has to regroup and move on again... End of prediction.

Great little scene at the end to fuck with my mind when they had Tyreese wear the riot gear after making you think it was Glenn. Fucker. Now , Im fucking on the edge of my seat waiting for vol.6 which I will attend to sunday night caz I fucking need to know...

Since I didnt review volumes. 1-4 Ill just make a general comment on the series thus far.

I picked up Walking Dead vol.1 for 10 bucks , recommended to me by many critics but specifically two horror fans whom called this "the greatest zombie story every told". I had to check this out.

I was hooked and sinkered after volume.1 by volume.2-3 Im 100% invested into Rick Grimes and everybody in his life at this point. Amazing experience. I really care about all the characters and the relationships between each. By volume.3 I am heart broken , ecstatic , stunned with all the ups and downs of this magnificent story.

Tony Moore draw and create the original , Charlie Adlard took over since and Adlard hasnt skipped a beat. Its penciled in black & white , it captures the mood and tone of the book better than if it was colour.

The question most asked is " what makes this different from other zombie stories?" .. its the focus on the characters and their relationships. The heart of the book isnt the zombies nor the action , its the humanity and where its going , how much is left , does it even exist. You realize that the biggest monsters in a world of monsters are humans themselves.

Im not even a zombie fanboy but I am for this series , this didnt disappoint at all. Amazing and I cant wait to keep going.

recommend: hells yeaz!! its survivor horror , drama , zombies ... best zombie story ever told.

noob friendly: yes , preferably if you start from beginning .. and its worth it to start from day 1.

1. Avengers #2 (Bendis , Romita Jr.) : not rating yet.
I dont want to critique too much of a comic book series only two issues in. I will say so far so good. Of the many various Avenger titles under the Heroic Age this is a good one.

recommend: Yes.

noob friendly: Yes , if you start from #1. Its a great time to jump on board with The Avengers

price/value: 3.99/ I wish marvel would add some pages for their $4 titles via their "directors cut" editions.

review: Wowzers. Epic conclusion to volume.1 of this Epic series. Uh-May-Zing.

spoiler alert*:

When the mystery of the traitor mole was introduced there were 6 suspects , but to me there's no way Molly was the mole despite her parents ensuring she's more than capable , Molly was asleep in her room when the mole dropped the first note in the bathroom. I also crossed off Nico , Chase and Gertrude for their own reasons. So it was down to Karolina or Alex for me.. so even though I had it on the radar its still a faptacular shock when it happens. Knocked my socks off!

Lets go back to the start of this issue. They first reveal the origin of the Pride which was good , and the legend of the Gibborm and the the Gibborm's agenda which was pretty bad ass in my opinion. Then within The Pride there was decension and betrayal on the horizon as you would guess with any evil org.. There was so much happening and just like a Seinfeld episode it was leading to one finish but it never felt confusing nor did it feel out of control. Vaughn intertwined everything together astutely smooth like buttah. So many ups and downs with so many "Awe" moments ; you'll be shouting various explicits as you read through like I did.

"NO FUCKING WAY".. were my exact words when they revealed the mole and realized who the mastermind of the whole series of events was " FUCKING EPIC" ...

and of course you with a story of betrayal and mistrust you need a little redemption moment ....

    The Good Die Young was brilliant , such a perfect and incredible end to the 1st volume. Vol.1 as a whole is awesome . You buy into the protogonists and invest into them immediately , you indulge into their individual personas and the relationships they build with each other. By the time you get to the end , you really care for these kids and what happens to them.

   For the antagonist Vaughn does a masterful job in frustrating you as the reader , but not that you get mad at yourself nor the characters , he directs the blame onto the villians so elegantly. Just brilliant in how he creates this landscape with so many obstacles for our young heroes to go up against all at the doings of the antagonists , the parents. Weaving in the "mole" plot was done so nicely , it created a suspensful cliffhanger and kept you as a reader on your toes throughout.

    Adriano Alphoma compliments BKV to a tee , the art designs and frame work is impeccable , they are the Hall and Oates of graphic novels. Loved the look of all the characters , very subtle and yet very stylish and fitting to the characters.. all of them. The design of the Gibborms and their underwater lair was fantastic , he captured the scale of it all.

Bryan K Vaughn is a savant , just an ass kicking savant. Superb story telling , superb character building , just an amazing overall experience. This novel is funny , its full of suspense , its action packed , its intense when it needs to be , its dramatic when called upon , its subtly intimidate when you want it to be ,.. it has everything you need for an entertaining joy ride.

Give this graphic novel a chance.. please!!!

recommend: Ita Vero!! which is latin for "Fuck Yeah!" well something like that. Its a super hero , teen drama , suspense

noob friendly: no , not this particular issue. I recommend starting from the beginning. Go pick up the 1st graphic novel "Pride and Joy" part 1/3 , 'Teenage Wasteland' part 2/3 and 'The Good Die Young" is part 3/3 of volume 1. There's 3 volumes overall ; think of each volume like a season for television.

price/value: You will not regret this. I recommend shopping Amazon.ca to see if they have them. Completed series 13 TPB volumes
Soft Cover Digests (6 issues) - $12. I dont like these because of their small stature they squish everything into small pages though it's convienant for travel. Most readily available.

Trade Paperbacks(6 issues) - $17 Considered the standard Graphic novel format. I like this format best , they feel and look like a comic and are affordable.

Comic Book Update: Birds of Prey

Lazy sunday but there was no Chronicles of Narnia on so I picked up a couple comics. I figure since Im dropping a few titles I have room on my read/pull list to add a title. I added DC's 'Birds of Prey' #1 and #2 under their 'Brightest Day' run. I wasnt going to touch it but two things caught my attention , A) Gail Simone is the ass woop'n writer whom also does Secret Six the only DC title Im into and B) secondly BoP has been getting solid reviews. It just started so I figure lets get on board while the gett'n is good.

So far so good. Bottom line is Im hooked , I cant wait to see where this goes. I dont even really know the characters but the action and pacing is so great it keeps you glued to the pages. Dialogue and bantering is standard. The art is faptastic (Benes and Melo), love the frame of Huntress kicking cop in the face! check'er out...

recommend: Yes , its a kick your feet up and enjoy the ride kind of read.

noob friendly: yes , I jumped on board and I dont feel horribly lost or confused. There are optional recommended reads from Gail Simone's BoP run from the previous volume that will help fill in any gaps. You can pick up via trade paperback.

price: 2.99 , still readily available off the rack. You'll have to look a little deeper for #1 but its still out there I got mine today.

Refrain from rating a new series. All Avenger Heroic Age titles have had a solid start. NA is no different. Doctor Voodoo and Dr.Strange appear in this and something is a brewing with the sorcerors whatchyamacallit amulet and the Avengers have to intervene.

If you like the others you'll like this one , if you havent picked one up yet.. check out any one of the Avenger titles caz if you like one you'll like all.

2. Black Widow #3 marvel comics(Liu , Acuna) ***1/2 -

A very good series so far , I picked up #2 on a whim and havent looked back since. I picked up #1 as well , and this is a fast paced , cloak and dagger story with lots of suprises , suspense and action. Writing is good its got me guessing and wanting more. The art is solid as ever , Black Widow looks amazingly sexy in one frame , a few pages later she looks bad ass , a few pages over she looks timid ,.. excellent pencilling. There's more to come , Im fully entrenched into this arc and cant wait for #4.

recommend: Yes , this is a balls to the wall series so far. Its a superhero , esponiage , mystery , suspense , ...

noob friendly: yes , you can jump on from #1 and not skip a beat. I do suggest jumping at #1 though which is still readily available off the rack , 2nd printing is due soon.

price/value: 2.99 .. great value. Its just a fun book to get into.

3.Chew vol.2 'International Flavor' image comics(Layman , Guillory) ***** -

Chew is my favourite new series out in the market("new" in comic book terms , came out in 2009). Chew is just gross out , knock your socks off , edge of your seat , laugh out loud fun . Chew vol.2 is funny , smart , dark and twisted and did I mention funny? Writing is whimsical , the art is piercing , and as various comic critics put it "its like Guillory and Layman are soul mates caz their work go perfect together" and its 100% true. Chew is a required taste (excuse the pun) but if you take a bite dont be suprised you'll crave more!

recommend: Yes to the highest degree. Its a comedy , crime mystery , gross out , suspense ,... must see.

noob friendly: hell yes. You can jump on from any starting point of a new story arc but just get Chew TP vol.I 'Tasters Choice'

how were you in the "industry" ?
My brother use to own a comic shop between 93-96 Comic Creations on 41st and KNight. I was part of it of course. Well , being retailers we helped distribute comics and graphic novels therefore we were "part" of the "industry".

Why did you quit?
like all my old hobbies caz I was in my early 20s and girls and booze was more important.

Did you try to get back into it at all?
Yes , 2004 , right before the release of Revenge Of The Sith I went to go buy General Grievous' comics but they were sold out so I didnt bother after that.

What did you collect before?
Marvel mainly but I wasnt even that dedicated. I was more into value collecting , I would buy comics in hope it goes up in value rather than just reading and enjoying a good comic book.

Did you read anything at all during your hiatus?
Very little , but I did get into watching Justice League and Teen Titan cartoons. Absolutely loved them. I had a general knowledge of all the Super Hero movies.

What are you reading now?
read my blog and you'll see my pull list and such week to week. Right now Im catching up on a lot of back issues and titles for some graphic novels like Walking Dead , Runaways , Y The Last Man, ...etc I have a lifetime of material to catch up with.

general comments:
After a 15 year hiatus , I was thinking about getting back into comics caz I was caught up in the Avengers hype. so I wanted to read The Avengers. Well , it turns out the Avengers were relaunching 4 new series and a mini series right that week. I took that as a sign.. the week Secret Avengers #1 was released , Avengers #1 the week before.. I didnt think twice , I was at the comic book store the very next day to get me some comics and get back into this wicked shit.

I really miss the nerdyness of a comic store , its so awesome.

Degrassi disappointed street

back in 2001 Degrassi aired a 1 hour reunion episode to launch Degrassi The Next Gen. I never saw it or maybe I did and forced myself to forget caz I had zero knowledge this existed , so almost a decade later I finally watched a show I craved to see.

Im starting to believe I actually did see it and then sniffed glue to blank my head only to forget the reasons why I wanted to erase it ,but now its back. I HATED IT!!!!!!!

First off , they changed the goddamn timeline. The older class was Grad 92 , they were coinciding with me to a tee.. they were in grade 8 in '88 , grade 9 in '89.. , Lucy was running for school prez for the following season which meant senior year which was aired /91.. and finally , School's out aired in 92!! now in this stupid reunion show , its the class of 90.. WTF!?!!?!? they also made a major change , Caitlyn is born 1972 in the reunion show which meant she grad'ed with the older class! she was in the younger class and graduated early!!!! they messed up the time line completely which totally ruined the thought that this was me and my friends in school. Goddamn it.

Secondly , they actually bring a bunch of people back but they're all standing in the background! they gave Allison more lines than everybody else!!! I understand there were scenes shot but they cut it all out so they can get their precious Joey and Caitlyn story.. whipdee doo. Im here to find out if Alexa and Simon are still married? is Stephanie Kaye all slutty now? did Vuola blossom into a hot piece of ass.. goddamn you , Degrassi.

Thirdly furthering on issue #2, the gave more lines to Allison than the Yickster!!!!! goddamn you.

I cannot convoy my disdain for this reunion episode more , I am thouroughly disturbed. I demand a reboot and redo of this.. 20 years is coming up for me in real life and for the Degrassi crew. Do it right please. None of this bullshit grad 90.. youre Grad 92 assholes.

Movie Review: Tod Browning's Freaks

I finally watched this 1933 classic I've been aching to see for years. This movie is so profound and lingering it superseded my expectations which I tried to keep nil. My curiosity for the eccentric oddities known as "circus freaks" was met in this film. It sounds rude of me to say that but its the truth and its our nature to be inquisite about "freaks".

Entirely casted with real life "oddities" , they came through with a brilliant performances despite not being actors. Their individual stories are a mix of tragedy to fondness to disturbed , just like "regular" people.

The plot is simplistic and yet so effective. A shallow gold digging primadonna acrobat named Cleopatra conspires with Hercules the strong man of the show to get the manager to marry her and then kill him to inherit all his money. The characters are mesmorizing and bizarre yet so compelling because they are real. You buy into them from the moment you see them.

Its not very long being a 1933 film but its a lovely film. Great example of less is more/better , resulted in a well made movie with a good story differenciated by the cast. I can see why this has the cult following it has caz I am part of this cult now.

Movie Review: sort of.. Keep Your Head Up , Kid - Don Cherry Story

The movie was good considering it was a CBC made for tv feature. 2 parter , 4 hours total.. probably 2 3/4 hours overall without commercials. Very entertaining. I was glued to the show.

I want to comment on some the stuff they portrayed that I didnt know or just forgot.

- Don Cherry blew his chance at an NHL career with a tragic yet bonehead baseball injury in the offseason. He was a bright prospect for the Bruins , dislocated his shoulder and showed up to camp hurt. In those days there is zero sympathy for injuries. His second chance with the LEads blown caz he went after Ron Ellis , the Leafs golden boy.

- Don Cherry coached the Vancouver's AHL affiliate team in Rochester. A) I didnt know the he coached for the Canucks technically and the Canucks gave him his pro coaching break with the Americans. But i now know why he has a disdain ill feeling towards the franchise , they treated him like crap. Tried hard to make him the scape goat and handle him like a puppeteer. Firing him despite doing a good job.

- I didnt know Cherry was also the GM of the Rochester Americans along with being coach the next season as an indepedant AHL team. Meaning no prospects from NHL clubs , he had to recruit the entire roster going camp to camp asking for cast offs. He turned a journeymen tough guy Battleship Kelly into a serviceable NHLer and from a business point of view , signed him for 7500 bucks and sold him to St.Louis for 50K.

- HIs personal work with JOhn Weinsink and making him a personal project and turned him into a respectable NHL name. The guy scored 27 goals in one season for the Bruins.

- Overall his personal life was always private so seeing anything to do with Rose and his kids was new.

In the end I see Cherry with a slightly different light , Im not suprised with anything I was merely enlightened.

I have no idea why it went down now. I dont overclock anymore , I dont mess around with anything anymore , I strictly just use it. I went through the long haul of trouble shoots , including tring different Ram , CPU , Video cards , audo cards , Hard drives , ...EVERYTHING. I figure it must be the chipset on the motherboard? I dont know. Im reinstalling my old motherbaord which I prefer anyways considering I paid almost $300 for it. Now this mother fucker wont install for some fucking reason.. the SATA drives that worked before now gets errors..

Now , Im installing XP HOme on a old IDE drive jst so I can install the drives onto a floppy and try installing PRO on my SATA.

Maybe its a blessing caz I was planning on getting a Win7 PC anyways. Lets see how this goes first.. its going to take all night , I wont finish until tomorrow at the earliest. I dont even know if this will work.

Plus if it does.. I have to reinstall EVERYTHING AGAIN!!! its such a kick in the nards. Just installing the Service Pack is a acidy leak out of the anus.

This is when I wish I lived in Texas and owned a semi automatic caz I would like to destroy some old junk right now in the backyard with some scorching bullets.

*UPDATE

its 48 hours later almost..monday and I finally got windows installed and everything seems to be ok.

I admittingly majorily fucked up on the install in that I totally forgot i had a faulty PCIE slot and was suppose to use slot 2.. I wasted a good 6 hours+ on that alone. Kicked myself in the nards.

But the originally Hard drive problem? I dont know , Im speculating I might've got the D-Dos Worm and destroyed my harddrive (not permanently) but I really dont know what went wrong.

Vancouver Closing Ceremonies

The games are officially over. Its sad caz there was this holiday like vibe in the city for two weeks. It was ok to slack off or sleep in.

Anyhoo the closing ceremonies ....

Started really slow and boring and the middle portion was great. The concert segment started good but ended with who the fuck cares bands. I shouldnt say started slow and boring , they started initially by correcting their faux paus from the opening ceremony by poking fun at themselves with the whole malfunction.

I was going to rant off on various topics but Im really exausted from a long long week. Trust me on this , Im still feeling the after math of a long week but Im hoping Ill be 100% tomorrow again.

Taboo and Touchy subject: Too much ?

There's a lot of people who feel 1st nations were forced down our throats during the opening ceremonies. Too much of it as they say.

Here's how I see it. Its not that there's too much , I would welcome 50% , 75% , 100% of the ceremony to be 1st nations IF they had a show to warrant it. Unfortunately there's not enough depth and variety to it , its the same drum beating and ritual dancing. The equivalent to make my point would be if China did the Dragon dance you see on chinese new year for 2 hours. There's more to the arts and theatrical culture of china , they tell stories. They could've told the story of the salmon catch.. have 100s of kids dressed as salmon run through and fisherman catching them and do the ritual.. all done in a artsy dance thing , have Shania Twain meet in the middle for mainstream and 1st nation pride.. and my crotch's pride. But they didnt , they just danced around with drums beating like usual. There was no story telling.

I saw the drum and dance routine the night before when they welcomed the torch , what the hell was the difference? its the same routine. They dont tell stories which so ironic because the fabric of their culture is the elders passing on their stories to generations. Call me crazy but I would've had a theme of elders passing on their stories in the form of dance , music and art. Rather than look there's hundred of aboriginals dancing wiht feathers and paint and beating a drum. Yay.

There was so much potential to do something special for their culture and take it to the next level.

Olympic Opening Ceremony

Ok its finally here... firstly I saw the flame yesterday by Central Park.

So I have been really curious to see what they would do overall in this show. I have to say I was pleasantly suprised how good they made BC Place look. I didnt even recognize it on tv. Looked really good.

RIght off the bat a little mess up , they pan the camera onto the executive box for a spotlight and everybody is scrambling like we just caught them smoking dope and making out or something. Apparently they werent ready caz the chiefs werent there yet.. I dunno , small blunder.

I was bleh with the Oh Canada rendition. I forgot the singers name , didnt recognize her.

First part was the 1st nations portion , they introduced the 4 nations historical cultural significance to the northwest and a bitch slap to our school systems to teach more of 1st nations local history and culture. Good.

Then the countries march in. Very emotional to see Georgia walk in as they lost one of their athletes earlier in the day to a horrific accident on the luge run. Canada marched in last and erupted the place with a big team projected to cotend. So many drop dead gorgeous girls competing .. I was just a pervert seeing these women.

Then back to the entertainment portion with Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams kicking off the second half of the show. Bryan Adams screwed up via Ashley Simpson style and didnt have the mic to his mouth while he was "singing". They sang 'Bang the Drum'..Nelly Furtado looked great , I want to boik that body. She's way sexier with her curvy women body than her skinny little girl body.

Next part was really cool , hologram of Orca whales swam through the stadium. They broke into a dance about nature , trees and wildlife with Sarah Mclachlin sining " just another miracle". She too looks so damn sexy. Gawd she's amazing.

Then a portion of keltic crap.. some tap river dance and fiddling. Ashley whats his name performed. Not my kettle but I enjoyed the show regardless.

Then they went into a story about a girl ' Who has seen the wind' WL Mitchell , I thought maybe it was the story of Emily Carr but it was a Disney like production of a girl floating around and discovering the beauty of wheat and hay. Accompanied by some canned jazz.

They then erected the mountains to George Vancouver with hovering skiers and snow boarders. Generic music playing... they could've used a little Corey Hart imo but thats just me.

Then KD Lang rises by her lonesome singing a tune that I dont recognize but it was a sombering song. It goes with the pacing I guess you cant have 2 hours of screaming madness , you need some down spots.

The Olympic flag carried in by Donald Sutherland , Betty Fox , Jaq Villineuve , Anne Murray , Bobby Orr ,... the offical Olympic hym sung by opera singer. Nice tune.

Hayley Wickenheiser takes olympic oath , then french singer sings french song I dont recognize. ANother sombering tune.

Torch arrive Rick Hansen > Catrin aLemay Doan> Steve Nash> Nancy Greene > Wayne Gretzky,, long awkward pause caz technical problems with hydrolic system. SO long they looped the music. Embarrasking.

Gretzky takes torch to the outdoor cauldron afterwards....

Overall it was a good opening ceremony . I cant say it was the best ever nor was I blown out by any portion , the final lighting screw up really hurt , it was a nice idea though. The pacing was a little off , more slow moments than "moving" , not enough crowd pops. Some problems at the end , the rain for the outdoor shots didnt help but considering it was a first indoor show.. it was good.

Feb 3 2010: Guido Quer

Last night when I went to bed at around midnight , a host of ambulances and a firetruck parked outside my place. Immediately I thought of my next door neighbour of 30 off and on years when I lived "home" , Guido whom has been having health issues the past few years. It finally caught up to him as he passed away.

Guido was a retired gentleman in his late 70s , immigrated here from Italy and a canadian citizen of 50 years. He is survived by his wife Pina , his two adult daughters , a son in law and two grand sons , also by his siblings whom Im not familiar with.

He worked for the city , he was part of the road crew I think , I remember he would get his truck crew during icy winters and he would shovel salt for the block. SOmething we all took for granted caz without his pull we would be in line with the rest of the smhmucks but Guido always made sure our block was top priority, Well mainly for his kids and wife but we all benefited from his kindness. Even when we had the two can limit for trash , Guido always made sure that his house and ours got unlimited treatment , again , a perk we take for granted.

Guido always took care of our lawn. Mowing our side and weeding our driveway and garden. Seeing he was an avid gardener he really enjoyed it , it was like having a huge yard for him. It didnt go unnoticed , Guido.

I remember he attended my dad's funeral. I remember looking back and Guido stood out in crowd of chinese people , there he was head bowed showing his respect to his fellow immigrant middle class blue collar father. He didnt have to , he didnt know my dad very well but Guido was always about respect and showing it.

I remember when we lost our power for 3 days , Guido let us plug an extension chord into his house and gave us power for bare necessities like a lamp and radio. Thank god we didnt have the electric stove at the time.. or did we? I dont recall. I recall Guido always willing to lend a hand when called upon.

Guido was a sparkling charismatic man , he was a superb father and husband and good all around guy. He always had friends over drinking his wine and eating their food. A man can be judged by the company they share , he had a lot of good friends that stuck by him. Im sure Guido wished he was a little younger so he could play some sports with his grand kids but he probably had the time of his life watching them regardless. I can only imagine Guido's joy in his grand sons.

Guido was the prototype neighbour that we all dream of , that we all want and we dont appreciate until he's gone. I will miss hearing Guido shuffle through his shed at all times of the day and night, we're talking 6am to midnight. I will miss Guido setting up the sprinklers to wet both our yards. I will miss Guido asking if we need anything. I will miss Guido's homemade wine. I will miss Guido. Guido my friend I will forever miss " how you doing young fella!".

When Geocities was cancelled I felt there was a huge hole in the market for a free , easy to use web builder and web host for casual users and noobs. Then I had just discovered WIX.com almost by fluke , I noticed the link another users webpage , clicked and I am here ... I tested it. Its pretty damn good. I will further test later on my Ubuntu to see if its Linux friendly but why wouldnt it be.

Superb control panel for web tools , many many toys to play with. It also has more advanced settings if you're an experienced web builder and want to custom set your page. Definitley its noob friendly.

Who would I recommend this for: anybody. Personal web , informational , educational , small business ,..etc I cant say enough.

Cons: Nothing. Its a fair system , you want a full URL and no WIX ad bar ,then pay. The free version is pretty damn good.

You only get 500mb storage space , though considering Geocities offered 15mb per account , this could also be viewed as a "pro". 500mb is great for starters and 1gb bandwidth , which is good for public/private sites with casual traffic.

RATINGS: 9.5/10.. I mean I don't even know why I penalized them .5 for a free web host , website , web builder... its simply amazing and I'm ecstatic this website exist. Its exactly what the market needs , a new "geocities". I guess the one thing is their own ad at the bottom but its bloody free , what do you expect? I wouldn't have found this site if not for that free ad at the bottom of another user. Why the fuck do we censor swear words still?

I am absolutely miffed that we still censor ourselves from using swear words everywhere and everyone. Seriously swear in front of your kids.. who cares. Let me explain first , you cornhole twat then you can disagree with your stick up the ass way of thinking.

Two of the most popular words in an adults vocabulary are "Fuck" and "Shit" yet they are deemed swear words and forbidden to be used in news print , mainstream television , in everyday public forums ,..etc because they are bad thats what we've been told since we were little.

Lets examine the words and why we need to censor them

Fuck. A street slang term that means to have sex with.. for eg. "I wanna fuck her/him" translates into I wanna have sex with you. So whats the big hub bub? I want to have stick my penis in her vagina... I want to FUck her. Same bloody meaning and Saved myself 15 letters of typing to boot.

Its also morphed into a expressive verb for eg. " HOLY FUCK! THATS FUCKING AWESOME!!!" this PG'd down into " HOLY COW! THATS REALLY AWESOME". Its ok to teach kids that if you're bad you will burn in hell for eternity by this real demon known as Lucifer whom watches you like Santa but its wrong to say Fuck in front of these same kids? really? Seriously do we even know what we are censoring ourselves from nowadays?

Fuck has also taken on the "smurf"ism persona and can be used to replace words to express one's current emotional state. For eg. " Get the FUCK out! you dumb fuck!" .. normally one would say " Please exit the room! you dumb person!" .. when you want ot make a point , you exchange the normal words with Fuck and you have a much more succesful way of expressing yourself. So the word Fuck is even more favourable useage.

So whether you use the word FUCK or not , the content is still there and isnt that what should be censored? Its taboo for me to say "She would be a wicked FUCK" in public but " She would be so wicked having intercourse with"... reallY?

Lets carry on, how about the anti christ of vocabulary.. "SHIT". Its poo. There's no sub context to this word , its just another word for poo. Its an unsanctioned street slang term but its used more than the real words of poo , poop , feces , dung , crap , ...etc There's no hidden meaning in these words to censor them from kids.. its not like the word Fuck or Shit have a hidden meaning of "I am a satan loving , murdering rapist..and Im also lazy and envious of rich people". No , they mean what they mean just like the official words in the dictionary.

"Goddamn" I actually understand and respect that being more a "taboo" or "swear word" because you are calling out a religious figure that is very meaningful to somebody and asking God to condemn something/someone. Basically there's a .... wait for it... CONTEXT to that phrase.

Its the context we should be censoring dont you think? just lift the ban on all swear words. If I said " I wanna Fuck the shit out of her " in front of your kids , would you be pissed at me for simply swearing or would you still be pissed at me caz I said " I wanna copulate her feces out of her anus".. right? its the context. Who cares what words we choose , FUck and shit are just words.

I petition to Webster , Oxford , Ponns , Duden ,... to sanction and accept all swear words as official usable words. We use them anyways why not sanction them. Maybe a med student can write their thesis on " Shit or Fucking" and not be scolded for using words that are more used than the actual words.

Jan. 5 to me

Jan. 5 was the day my dad was killed. 16 years ago , A block from home and it still lingers to a certain degree. I've found my peace and closure but cant deny the feelings. I still miss him and dream about him and wish he could see his grand daughters. I get disappointed in me when I forget to tell my nieces about their grand dad , not that there's a lot to tell , he wasnt a secret agent or a super hero or sort. Game Review: Dragon Age Origins (PC)

Dust off your inner dungeons and dragons geek child you have buried in you caz its time to get nerdy again! D&D style!

I love this game. Its fun , addicting , and bottom line entertaining.

Single Player Game , classic party build RPG ... find characters , build them up and fight , fight , fight with a lot of cheezy acting in between. Some of the story lines get intense and you choose your path on how you want ot be.. bad ass or goodie goodie , and your party members help determine this too. There's darker , aggresive characters to find and there's Jedi like characters to find , you can obviously figure which way you have to go.

It takes like 3-4 hours before the story and game play really picks up the pace , then its on going addictive dungeoning and dragoning. I can smell my nerd sweat and rattling of the di!

No spoilers here but there's some decent replay value , not only do you choose your path but there's 6 different story lines to start from. They all merge into the same linear plot afterwards but regardless , you'll wanna try each one ...right?

Im playing on the PC , it requires a standard modern gaming PC to really enjoy the beauty of it. You can play with lower models but it will look like a last gen console game , highly recomend investing into upgrading video cards to a 8800 series if you havent already.

Movie Review: Spider Man 3

I finally saw it. I hated the hype so I waited 2 years later to watch it. Not worth the wait.

What I liked: Jonah Jaimeson , Elizabeh Banks as Ms. Brant , ... thats about it.

What I disliked: Everything. From the run on 5 minute introduction that annoyed me caz I are half my popcorn just watching opening credits. WHy the fuck do they have opening credits , thats what the closing credits are for you morons.

I hated the overall mashed pile of story plots all stickied together for a 2 hour flick. Two of the three bad guys deserve their own movies.. the third could've been just a opening cameo caz he's not really that interesting (Sandman).

Harry who takes on the persona of the Goblin. Didnt like the costume design , you couldnt even tell he was suppose to be the goblin. Shoudl've had the mask. That was an important story dont you think? Harry looking to avenge his father's death on his best friend Peter Parker whom he happens ot know is Spider Man!!! toss in Mary Jane and you have Spider Man 3 stand alone.

Venom is also deserving of a Spidey Villian movie to himself. The whole concept of Venom and taking over Parker , and taking over Brock for a final confrontation should've had its own movie to itself. Maybe they woudlnt have to dumb down Brock's "You humiliated me" reason to wreak havoc.. couldve been more intense and thwarting.

Sandman is part of the old school family of villians for Spidey. Aside from the long time sentimentality , they are one dimensional and somewhat aloof from intriging. Rhino , Scorpion , Vulture , Sandman , Electro , Mysterio , ...etc There's so many. The writing would have to be really good to make these old schoolers work.. unfrotunately it didnt work here for Sandman.

Mary Jane might be one of my most disliked leading ladies. SOmething about this character that bugs me.

They dumbed down Gwen Stacy , she's actually a prominant fixture in Parker's life. She takes over for a long time as Parker's love interest , not just one half date. Something they should've considered if whats her face doesnt return for Mary Jane's role.. the girlfriend in superhero movies are replaceable. Except Lois Lane perhaps.

Betty Brant is smoking hot. I love Elizabeth Banks.

Plots:

Harry wants revenge on Parker.

Peter and Mary Jane fight and bicker.

Sandman wants to find a cure ofr his daughter and Parker wants to avenge his uncle's death on him.

Venom takes over Parker , then Brock , then dies? a living speace being that never gets explored. Venom is suppome to hitch back on Mar Jane's fiancee from SM2 from one of his space trips. Thats how Venom gets introduced to earth.

Bad News: I hate this movie and what it did to the series. It stinks.

Good News: Its fixable. Spider Man 4 must redeem itself with a simplistic yet in depth story line and more focus on the main characters.

I hate you Spider Man 3.

Movie Review: Rambo IV

Is it a great stand alone movie? of course not

Firstly the Rambo series is not a movie to take seriously. Its abut viscious violence.. this movie updates the gorgeousness of gun deaths! This is actually how Rambo shoudl've been.

First Blood is a great classic. It they were gonna sequel it with mindless gun killing violence then Rambo IV is what Rambo is about.

I dont even give a shit about the story or plot.. guns , blood , violence , .. it was awesome. Best Rambo sequel bar none. This should've been Rambo III not that middle eastern pile of dung we got in the late 80s.

Typical bad guys get away with haneous crimes like brutal rapes , murders and torture and the good guys one punch them and then call the cops. Yipee. Rambo blows heads into skull fragments like taco chips dipped into salsa... AWESOME. Rambo shoots extra bullets into decapitaed skulls just caz it feels fuckin good... AWESOME.

Must see for Rambo fans. The directors cut is supposedly coming out and is suppose ot add more depth to it. Only icing on the cake.

My 8 minute review : Murder By Numbers

Im only 8 minutes into a movie " Murder by Numbers " and I already rank Sandra Bullock contender for least convincing detective/cop EVER.

Its like having Stiffler as a FBI agent in a serious drama. It works like Ellen Degeneres doing heterosexual romantic comdies.

I have no idea what the rest of the movie is like but I cant take it seriously as long as Bullock is the lead cop.

UPDATE: we finished it.. it was stupider than this sentence.
